Ocean's Twelve bombed at the box office. They did Ocean's Thirteen just to prove the franchise was still viable

reply

MOVIE COST JUST NORTH OF 100 MILL..IT MADE OVER 300 MILL WORLDWIDE...

reply

My apologies. You're right. I just read it actually did better than Thirteen. I was misinformed.
I swore I read somewhere what I wrote above.
Thank you.

reply

I'm in minority but I actually loved Ocean's Twelve and hated Ocean's Thirteen

Didn't Chronicles of Riddick bomb? And then they finally got Riddick made and it bombed. And now they're trying to make another one and it's gonna bomb. Because they took the hard core anti-hero and made him a fantasy clown.

reply

Chronicles was a dud, but the 2013 Riddick was made on a much smaller budget and turned out a modest success, similar to Pitch Black.

xXx: State of the Union bombed but still gets a sequel... xXx: Return of Xander Cage. Plus another sequel planned.

reply

I think this was an instance of the production company bringing the series to a new studio and retooling it to align with current popular trends. As per the title, the third installment brought back Vin Diesel and integrated more of an ensemble cast approach similar to the Fast & Furious series. It was a back to the drawing board approach, but it paid off.

I don't think the Whole Nine Yards did that well, but it got a sequel. It's stars had some clout, I guess.

reply

Whole Nine Yards did reasonably well for a movie with low expectations. The sequel, however, was evidence that WB didn't know when to leave well enough alone, and it tanked when released in a busy spring weekend against a slew of other box office draws as well as a little independent film named The Passion of the Christ.

Did Halloween 3 bomb? Too lazy to look it up, but I wouldn't be surprised

reply

No, it did all right - just not as astronomically profitable as the first film. The Halloween series actually doesn't seem to have any out-and-out bombs, rather entries that barely break even or merely fail to live up to the expectations set by the bigger hits.

reply

If you look at the numbers, it didn't do that much worse than some of the sequels that followed it, I believe.

reply

Yes, that's more or less what I was getting at.
