"Walmart says its US store managers make an average of $175,000 a year"

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/09/walmart-report-reveals-average-salary-of-its-us-store-managers.html

I have a hard time believing this to be true. What do you guys think?

reply

Probably true, but keep in mind they are talking about THE store manager, not the army of assistant managers. The store manager is the top dog of the store, responsible for EVERYTHING, which can be very stressful in a retail environment. The store manager also typically earns an annual bonus based on the store's performance.

I briefly worked at a Radio Shack and the store manager got an annual bonus that IIRC was 1% of the stores annual sales.

reply

I still find that hard to believe. You're telling me they make more than some lawyers and dentists?

reply

There are plumbers and electricians who make more than some lawyers, not sure about dentists.

reply

So, why bother racking up debt going into professional school when you can make a cool $175K at a Walmart?

reply

It's not a job I'd want. Walmart supercenter stores are huge, and is a supermarket grocery store in addition to all the merchandise they sell. As the store manager you are responsible for far more employees than your typical lawyer of dentist.

A store manager of a busy McDonald's probably earns $100k. It's not a job I'd want.

reply

My cousin worked at a busy McDonalds and he told me the manager never got more than 40 hours per week, and only made $10.. So before taxes, $400/week comes out to $24,000/yr.

I think if the labor brings in billions of dollars, they should make a living wage. Its so bad for Wal-Mart that the employees have to go through hoops and ladders to get some food stamps (which they then spend back at Wal-Mart).. Then again, our government is always giving trillions in handouts, but only to the rich companies who put them in power.

reply

It must have been an assistant manager. There is no way a McDonald's store manager makes that little.

reply

managing a walmart or equivalent store is an incredibly demanding job.
it pays well, but it is a tough, demanding, stressful way to earn a living.

reply

Dentist seems like the medical sweet spot, nice income but 9-5 hours. There are specialists that also do well on 45-50 hour weeks but they are fewer in number.

reply

I agree - it's a very stressful job and s/he has to answer to HQ on everything, too.

reply

Do you think it's more than this? Or less?

reply

I was thinking around $60,000.

reply

I worked for another major retailer for many years. For a few years I processed the store's payroll. The store manager was making this much ($175K) 20 years ago.

reply

Managers of small retail stores with 10 employees make $60k. I have no doubt Walmart managers do well.

reply

I don't see a Walmart store manager making $175,000 in small town America or Canada

reply

Good point. The store I worked at was a big store in a major metro area. That's quite different from a smaller store in a small market.

reply

YUP...THATS ABOUT RIGHT...DONT FORGET THERE IS BUT ONE STORE MANAGER PER STORE...AS A PAST EMPLOYEE IM ALSO AWARS THAT STORE MANGERS ARE MOVED FROM STORE TO STORE AT WALMARTS DISCRETION...ANYTIME YOU COULD GET SENT ANYWHERE.YOU ALSO DEAL WITH EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE WHOLE NIGHTMARE THAT IS YOUR STORE.

reply

Sounds high. In Canada it would be $95,000 - 130,000

reply

There was no point of me going to professional school then and accrue all that debt. I should've became a WalMart manager.

reply

Many of the new managers have business degrees or diplomas. It is a very busy job with a lot of responsibility. Not everyone can do it.

reply

True. I don't think I can deal with screaming customers!

reply

Yet Walmart pay it's cashiers between $23,000 and $27,000 a year, barely enough to live on especially if you have to pay a mortgage or rent.

reply

That's fucking abysmal! Please tell me the 23K per year is AFTER income tax and other deductions.

reply

Not that much considering how much the Walton family are worth

reply

i don't think that's far-fetched at all.
i worked for a canadian chain that has stores of roughly equivalent size & sales, and while that's more than what they would make once performance bonuses are factored in, it's not that much more.

it seems like the right market rate for managing a store that size.
