What did you watch on this Halloween week? (27/10-02/11)

I hope you had a good one!

My week:

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998): I really liked this movie when I was a teen and I got a man crush on Josh Hartnet who wore the same kind of necklace I had! Plus my boy from Third rock from the sun, Joseph Gordon-Levitt made a great appearance. The big problem with this movie is that you have to go through half a dozen cheap-shot jump-scares of random people running into each other before, about an hour in, the real terror begins. And once this terror begins, there is about 0 to 1 scary moments. Overall: this is the Halloween movie of my generation and I like it, especially the first 20 minutes but I can understand people saying that it’s a not-so-good movie. My rating: 6.5-7/10

The crow (1994 TV): This is a real fucked up movie. First things first; it’s strange that it’s the first time for me to see this movie because my brother had a T-shirt that I wore when I wanted to look cool and he owned the movie and told me crazy s**t about a guy who got killed making it. But the years passed and it faded like an old memory in my head and now, as I finally got around to watching it, I realized that Bruce Lee’s son actually died shooting this movie and they had to patch holes with CGI and what not. Now the craziest thing of all is all the innuendos and insinuations concerning life and death in the script. It makes his character even creepy and his death even more peculiar and spectacular. A great movie and a greater tragedy...: 8.5/10

The strangers (2008 TV): Normally, I enjoy horror movies that don’t involve super-natural but this was bad. It sucked big time and that’s about all I can say. I love Arwen and she has some of the most kissable lips in Middle-earth but yeah, this movie sucks. 4/10

The Conjuring 2 (2016 TV): Well see, this one was good! They managed to pull me in what could have been just another possession/haunted house horror film and I was hooked! It was my first experience with the Warren’s but I’ll be sure to track down all of their work. Maybe I will give Annabelle a second chance after all… (see next review) My rating: 7.5/10

Annabelle (2014 TV): I watched it a whole hour. It was as much as I could get and I doubt it was about to get better. I would rather have seen the doll move instead of just sitting there all the frickin’ time, at least it could’ve been funny. 1/10

I Frankenstein (2014 TV): Normally I watch this kind of movie for the action and the special-effects and the story is secondary. Well in this case, The CGI is so bad that the weak-ass story that was offered was the high point of the movie and it was not enough for me to stick around longer than 40 minutes. 1/10

Nice list!!
I was trying to think of the name of Just Before Dawn (1981) yesterday and I’m glad I saw it in your post. I remember the camp director from Sleepaway Camp is the drunk old man in this one. Above all, when I think of this film I think of that whistle sound in the woods.

Thanks. I have a strange attraction towards old slashers from the 80's. The camp horrors are specially exciting. That's why I decided to "recollect" Sleepaway Camp trilogy, Just Before Dawn and The Burning

I love all 3. We should compare list sometimes!

Eli (2019) - A boy receiving treatment for his auto-immune disorder discovers that the house he's living in isn't as safe as he thought. The ending didn't work. It is a ripoff of a famous 1970s horror that I won't name. 6/10

Trainspotting (1996) - Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends. Finally saw it. I didn't like the beginning but it grows on you. Great characters and soundtrack. Ewan is a tour de force. 8/10

The Ghoul (1933) - An Egyptologist returns from the dead to take revenge on those who have violated his tomb. Most of these 1930s horror movies are straight forward but this one is not. The plot is confusing and then they ruin the whole movie with the ending which completely changed the movie. 5.5/10

Count Dracula (1970) - Count Dracula, a gray-haired vampire who regains his youth by dining on the blood of maidens, is pursued in London and Transylvania by Professor Van Helsing, Jonathan Harker and Quincey Morris after he victimizes them and their loved ones. This movie is suppose to be closest to the book but it is just too low budget to be taken seriously. The movie suffers when Christopher Lee is not in the movie. 6/10

A Reflection of Fear (1972) - A disturbed young girl starts believing that there is something very sinister at work after her estranged father visits her at her mother and grandmother's house with the woman he plans to marry. An interesting cast choice in this movie. Never saw the ending coming at all. Not a bad thriller for such a low budget. 6.5/10

The Most Dangerous Game (1932) - An insane hunter arranges for a ship to be wrecked on an island where he can indulge in some sort of hunting and killing of the passengers. I good isolated thriller movie. It should have been longer. Fay Wray was great. 7/10

The Hunt (2012) - A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie. A good portrayal of what a false accusation can do to a man's life. Great performance from Mads. I do have some questions about the actions of certain characters and then there's the ending. Was it real or not. 7.5/10

As usual, I skip horror flicks - just not my genre. Just a couple of things for me:

A Passage to India (1984 DVD) A young English woman and her future mother-in-law travel to Chandrapore, India to visit her fiance, the local city magistrate, during the 1920s colonial period. Hoping for an adventure to learn about Indian culture, both are distressed to learn that the ruling British do not socialize, let alone associate, with the native population. Misunderstandings and false claims create a major conflict involving race and class, resulting in a court trial. With a running time of 2 hours and 45 minutes, I found it overly long with a number of dull scenes that didn't really add anything of value. 6.5/10

Marcella - series 2 (Netflix) - I watched the first series last year, but can't remember if I finished it or not. 🤔 Rather than re-watch it, I decided to move on to the second one. Lots of potential suspects, twists, turns, and suspense, but the last 20 minutes of the final episode were, in a word, ridiculous. It was hard enough to get past the idea that Marcella would be allowed to work in her mental condition, but that ending... 🙄 Episodes 1-7, 7.5/10 Final episode 5/10. Supposedly there's a third series coming, but I'm done.

I'll look Marcella up ;)

My ratings of what others watched (ones I've seen before):
Texas Chainsaw (1974)- Groundbreaking for its time gets it a 7/10.
Shutter Island- I used to watch it fairly often but haven't for a while. Some good performances 6/10.
Silver Bullet- I love it and watch it periodically. Corey Haim portrayed a disabled person well and Gary Busey was his usual over-the-top self. 8/10.
Carrie (1976)- Yep, they got what they deserved. 6/10
Five Easy Pieces- I'm about due for a re-watch, been a while. 7/10
A Reflection of Fear- Saw it for the first time recently. I agree, hownos; suffers from low budget but not bad. 6/10

My Ratings of what I watched this week:
LONE WOLF MCQUADE- Yet again. My favorite Chuck Norris flick. Comic moments and the building East meets West duel with David Carradine. 7/10

MACON COUNTY LINE- I've always wanted to see this and finally had the chance to. Kept my interest throughout. 7/10

GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS- Brawl after brawl between English football 'fans'. It was worth watching a second time. 6/10

MULHOLLAND DRIVE- With David Lynch, you never know where the story is heading and you have to expect you'll watch it a few times to start getting the whole picture of where he's going. 8/10

DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004) - UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT- Well done update to Romero's unbeatable 1978 film. 8/10

DAY OF THE DEAD (2008)- Entertaining remake. Hospital scene was a high point. 6/10

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972)- I haven't seen this one in... decades. Well done but very disturbing content and I skipped forward to the end at a certain point. 7/10.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959)- Watched this with my wife, another film I haven't seen in decades. Complete opposite of Last House. Clean entertainment. 8/10

The incest element was creepy in The Crow. I had forgotten about it until I rewatched it a few months ago. Still a good action movie. 8/10
