Do you find Charlie Chaplin funny?
Or because it's so vintage, do you fail to connect to it?
I just can't laugh at his antics. I might smile and say 'that was clever' but he wouldn't have me in stitches that's for sure.

I know what you mean. There was usually some deeper message in Chaplin's humour that made it more cerebral. Whereas for an uncomplicated belly laugh you couldn't go past Laurel and Hardy.
The Great Dictator is one of my favorite movies. I don't get silent movies.
shareThe bulk of Chaplin's career was spent making short silent films starring his "Little Tramp" character, and IF you can find them they're still quite funny.
But that's a struggle, because not even TCM plays them as far as I know. Instead, the only films of Chaplin's that are ever played today are his later feature films from the sound era, such as "City Lights" and "The Great Dictator", when he'd become serious, self-important, and sentimental. Most of his films have their moments, but they're just not as funny as his early work.
I remember seeing Modern Times on TCM this past year.

Yes, very much so.
😎
I watched some shorts once in a big screen (the town hall projected old movies open air during the summer) and it was funny as hell.
In a TV, though, I like more his dramas (the Kid, Modern Times). The shorts don't feel the same. I don't think it's because of being vintage, I'd rather say that that kind of humor doesn't work well in a TV.
Sometimes - I much prefer Harold Lloyd.
shareI don't find him funny. I do like Marx Brothers and to a lesser degree the Three Stooges though, so I don't think it is because I dislike antic/physical type humour. Although Marx Bros. had lots of word play as well.
