Scorsese is right, superhero movies are garbage

I’m so fucking sick of that trash being shitted out 3-4 at a time, it’s like idiocracy. These films have literally overtaken cinema.

Yeah I know I don’t have to watch them, that’s not the problem. You can’t avoid the massive marketing campaigns and nonstop hype and chatter on social media and message boards, like shut the fuck up already about this crap! It’s not that god damned interesting!! The acting, dialogue and screenplays are so juvenile and simplistic. I’m tired of constantly being reminded that people are idiots who have no appreciation or understanding of the art of cinema and that pop culture is complete shit. It’s not elitist it’s objective fact that none of those movies comes close to the quality and depth of his films. He is a legend and has earned every right to speak up on something that needs to be addressed.

reply

I agree. I’m wondering when the public will finally be done with this genre. I guess they will keep churning them out as long as they make money.

reply

I'm sick of both. I'd like to watch new movies, but considering I can only dedicate a certain amount of time on movies, I'm sticking with movies made before I was born.

reply

I do the same thing. I'd say 7 out of every 10 movies I watch are before I was born. Sadly, the amount isn't unlimited.

reply

I've seen thousands of movies, and I still have thousands on my Watchlist.. I check out movies from as many countries as I can, and there's still a ton I haven't even searched for. On IMDB, find a movie you like, and then look to the lower right, and there will be similar IMDB lists, where I've found many movies.

Also, let's say we both list our Top 10 movies. If I like 9 of your 10 movies, but never heard of the 10th one, chances are good I'll like it, so I'll check it out.

Criticker is a site that could help you find people who share the same tastes. You can export your IMDB ratings, and BOOM.

Are there any kind of movies you love? I would be happy to search for some recommendations I think you'd like.

reply

I’m almost in the same boat but all my interest lie in films of the 70’s to 80’s. I’ve entirely skipped the superhero thing and the last one I saw was the Val Kilmer Batman.

reply

The 70s are my favourite decade for both movies and music.

reply

I love Italian cinema and for me it’s their westerns of the 60’s, euro crime of the 70’s and horror of the 80’s with some overlapping of course.

reply

I'm not usually a fan of Italian cinema, but I do enjoy their gangster films. Something about Italian cinema bothers me. I think it's the overdubbing.

reply

I understand fully. It’s something that’s grown on me.

reply

Have you seen Kapo? It's a great Italian film.

reply

No I have not but I just looked it up and have placed it on my list of films to watch. Thank you!

As a WWII trade, have you seen Come and See (1985)? It’s a Soviet production.

reply

I saw it years ago and I liked it. I gave it an 8 on IMDb. I love war films. If you know any others, I'll check it out.

reply

I like the neo-realism movement of the 60s-70s. Italian films, French films.
And on the other side, I like the surreal quality of much of Fellini's work, at least when he employed it well.
Often I will say I will prefer a film that tries to be great and fails versus a film that aims to be mainstream popular and succeeds. At least I'm concentrating and not just getting predictable rewards, i.e., action, good guys overcoming bad odds.
I think of the J Irons movie Kafka. I don't think it was very popular or successful but I remember watching it in the theater and it was much more interesting than, let's say, The Fugitive.
I mean, I really enjoyed The Fugitive but it didn't have much more than an exciting pace and Tommy Lee doing his thing.
I admit I get seduced by the Art House / Foreign / Critics thing, but it feels more satisfying than watching Chris Evans, ScarJo, and Hemsworth with their silly gravity defying, unrealistic feats.

reply

Kafka looks very interesting and with a great cast. I do agree the modern mainstream formula is quite a bore.

reply

Some of my favourite foreign films from before I was born:

Les Diaboliques
Cria Cuervos
Seppuku
Le Samourai
Cries & Whispers
The Human Condition Trilogy
High & Low
This Man Must Die
Don't Look Now... We're Being Shot At (Saw it once and loved it but I can't seem to find it for another watch.)

reply

I am sick of your trash posts, you're such a scorsese fanboy.

reply

Scorsese is a genius, even the people who are making and starring in MCU movies acknowledge this. They know they’re outmatched and outclassed, that’s why even an enormous, heavily muscled multi-bllion dollar industry like MCU has almost to nothing to say about it. He’s the fucking man, he is the godfather of modern cinema and nothing in that genre or any other for that matter is making anything that comes close to reaching the depth and quality of his body of work. You can talk shit if you can back it up. MCU quietly took a seat and is thankful to even be in the same conversation as him. This is the first and last time you will see these two in the same sentence.

reply

You're such a bore.

reply

so is Scorsese and his credit card commercials where he got paid 50 million. That's not cinema, either, Marty! The guy has made one great movie, and many shitty ones. The last superhero movie I saw was Superman. I like movies that are going to make me appreciate talent.

reply

I enjoy superhero AND Scorsese movies

reply

Same.

There's room for both to thrive.

reply

Agreed
It's weird to hear so many objecting to fun, silly blockbusters when there is room for all of them

Some people take stuff way too seriously

reply

I agree with you whole heartedly Shogun. I can’t remember when another genre created such an uproar.

reply

My tastes can be a bit quirky at times, but as long as I find film entertaining that's the only thing that matters. Someone venting their spleen trying to sway anyone who'll listen to condemn an entire genre makes me want to watch it that much more. If I don't like it, I won't watch - but that decision is Mine!
Calm down moviebuff, yer gonna blow a gasket.

reply

The level of hate for superhero movies does seem silly

I don't care for rom-coms but I get that some people enjoy them and quite a few have made good bank...no hate here!

People are strange...

reply

Rom-coms are huge business in China. With the country pulling its weight in the film industry, buying AMC, expect more rom-coms in the foreseeable future. Don't you just feel the love?

~~/o/

reply

I'll love skipping them all👍

reply

Good! Make them step up their game. They'll want to find some way to include everyone, including Shoguns with a need for speed.

~~/o/

reply

Yes!
A rom-com about US Navy Fighter Pilots facing down Migs over the Arabian Gulf and finding love on their off days...She's a Maverick and he's a...dead Goose:(

That might be more of a tragi-rom-com but we can cutesy it up in re-writes

We'll make a billion easy if we cast an Asian in one of the leads😃

reply

Oh such blatant racism!
Look out, here comes the PC police! Lol!

reply

It's not just movies either. Some folks get completely bent about things that Other People have, do or enjoy etc etc.
If you (hypothetically) don't like what someone else does, well does it harm you? Cause you hardship? Directly interfere with your life in any way? Is it illegal? Does it harm anyone else? If the answer is no then you should keep it to yourself. It's most likely that you are indulging in behavior that (at least until recently) is unacceptable.
Many of the rights afforded(?) us in this country protect us from this very same behavior.
Look, if you (again, hypothetically) don't enjoy the things the others are doing - don't do them. Don't watch. Don't think about it.

Because that's all you CAN do. It seems apparent that you're causing YOURSELF hardship because it has you cursing it, the people and the activity repeatedly and vehemently.
It can't be good for your blood pressure, for instance.
Damn. That was long-winded. Did it make any sense?

reply

Some folks are only sated when their belly is full of hate...I've been on a diet for a couple of years✌️

reply

Ah that's funny lol

reply

Me too!

reply

Same here.

reply

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but that doesn't mean you or Scorsese are right. There are lots of great superhero films that are very well made. I love a lot of Scorsese films but I can also appreciate a high quality, artfully made superhero film.

reply

Please name such a film

reply

Logan. But I do agree with Scorsese. It's hard to find a superhero movie like he describes.

reply

Bc they don’t exist. I haven’t even seen a fraction of them and I can confidently make that statement.

reply

I think they're extremely rare.

reply

I haven’t seen one. Man of Steel was ok, but inconsistent and lost it’s footing midway through.

reply

Logan was excellent👍
I really like most of the superhero pictures but Logan may be the best of them (with the exception of Superman 1978 which is a classic)

reply

Avengers Endgame
Avengers Infinity War
Black Panther
Logan
Batman
Batman Returns
Superman
Iron Man
Wonder Woman
Thor
Captain America Civil War
Captain America Winter Soldier
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Spiderman 2
Spiderman Into the Spiderverse

reply

The Toxic Avenger just never seems to get any super hero respect! Geezzz!

reply

Love that guy. It's not intended to be taken seriously, alot of them aren't.
It's Entertainment.

reply

I'm well over super hero films and gangster/crime movies. Both over done and boring.

reply

Scorsese didn't say superhero movies are garbage tho'

reply

Basically

reply

Just sayin'
