THE FACT THAT THIS IS EVEN A TALING POINT FOR THESE "OLD GUYS" IS KINDA SAD.

reply

Yeap, 'old guys' who made some Masterpieces of Cinema History, wasting their time talking about cinema, when they could be tweeting about Trump. Kinda sad :-(

reply

Those old guys also made some turd movies along the way as well. It isn't like they have a perfect track record, no one does. So their opinion on anything may or may not be valid... clearly their opinion but not a fact that cannot be questioned.

Frankly they sound like old farts that refuse to move with the times... Movies have evolved and they are stuck in the past. Do I like watching Marvel movies? Not really, they bore me most of the time, but the fact is they make lots of money which means there are clearly a lot of people that do enjoy them. So the facts indicate that this is the kind of stuff the public at large wants to see and the reason movies are made isn't for the sake of art it is to make money. I've watched those art films and in general they suck which is why they never get picked up and put into mainstream theaters.

reply

THEY ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT CINEMA...THEY ARE DRAWING LINES AND TALKIN G THE EXLUSION OF CERTAIN FORMS OF CINEMA.

reply

No, what's sad is that today's generation is so pathetic, it would take an interview in which he was asked his opinion about CBM movies, blow it up on social media, and then howl with outrage over what he said, as if it were the end of the world.

reply

I’ll take the MCU superhero films over Scorsese’s spin of the “facts” films any day. I watch the MCU films to escape, knowing full well they are a fantasy. With Scorsese I don’t know what is fact or how Scorsese chooses to see the facts. He’s made some very questionable films. To be blunt I believe he sees what he wants to see and puts it to film. MCU “Despicable”?....my arse! 😡

reply

""When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again,"... yes, they do, it's called escapism. And cinema has always been about escaping to new worlds.

reply

Escapism is compatible with Cinema with capital letters. The comedies from the 30s/40s were escapism back then, and they're a key part of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Western movies were escapism. Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark and Willow were escapism. Hitchcock was escapism back in the day. Some Billy Wilder movies were escapism.

reply

Yes! I know that Scorsese and Coppola are from an era when cinema went "artsy" but people like Spielberg, who were huge fans of fantasy and escapism, brought it back in the 80s and said 'why feel bad for enjoying sci-fi?'

You could argue that Marvel movies are even MORE cinema because that's the best place to see them. Large screen. Surround sound. That's an immersive experience and the reason why people don't say 'I'll wait for them on DVD' because people know, you actually need a decent cinema experience to experience the fantasy worlds that they create.

reply

We don't expect to learn something from cinema... we might expect to learn something from a documentary... but a regular movie is just supposed to entertain the audience. That's it. If you make movies to try and sway the audience then you are no more than a propagandist... I think the world saw what happens when movies are made for that purpose with WWII.

When filmmakers start yammering about how they are making something beyond entertainment it betrays their narcissism, when people watching think it is something beyond entertainment they are just idiots.

reply

Cinema does have the power to educate, to open people's eyes to different perspectives, etc. But that doesn't have to be the prerequisite.

reply

I expect to learn absolutely nothing from cinema and the films Scorsese and Coppola have made are hardly educational and in some cases pretty damn bad to mediocre.

In most cases to be honest.
Nor have I felt enlightened by their movies.

So from my perspective their "cinema" fails as it does not achieve it's stated objective.

reply

Coppola hasn't made a decent film in over 35 years.

reply

Coppola barely has directed anything since the 90s. But before he semi-retired, he directed Godfather, Godfather II, Godfather III, Apocalypse Now and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

reply

Knish's statement that he hadn't made a decent film in over 35 years is correct... the only two you listed even fall within that time frame are Godfather III and Dracula both of which were not that good. Godfather III was weak and he even had the audacity to stick his own daughter into a critical role where she only helped to ruin the movie... with Dracula is was almost bad enough to make a list of films so bad they are good, but really just managed to be bad as it was boring and brought nothing new to an already tired and cliched character.

reply

Coppola and Scorsese made cult classics. Why the hell they even talk about brainless supehero crap?

reply

The reason why they're talking about it is that childish man babies dragged them into their stupid man baby world of CBM movies.

This all started when Scorsese did an interview for Empire Magazine. He was ASKED about whether he had seen any of the latest Marvel films. He said he didn't watch them, and then he explained why. Why an idiot would ask an acclaimed director like him who specializes in gritty, grounbreaking gangster movies whether he watches CBM franchises is beyond me, but maybe the interviewer was trying to bait him.

Man baby directors and writers like Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith and James Gunn on social media heard his answer and completely overreacted, acting as if Scorsese had launched some kind of full blown assault on Marvel movies. Then more man babies started attacking Scorsese. So now another acclaimed director has to jump to his defense, so that man babies on social media don't completely destroy his legacy in the eyes of a new generation of film goers, since they're going around ranting that he's a has been, a hack, bitter, etc.

This is kind of a crappy thing that both GenX (I'm GenX) and millennials are notorious for doing now. When someone says something they don't like, they just go on the offensive on social media and rally their tween followers into a pathetic culture war where now legendary directors have to defend their legacies against 12 year old morons calling their movies crap or writing them and their movies off as irrelevant or overrated. I think this kind of thing highlights why social media is so dangerous now. It's given the lowest common denominator too much power.

reply

Everyone has a right to their opinion. I don't necessarily disagree with what I think they're trying to say, but I can't agree with what they've actually said, especially these two points of contention from Coppola:

Marvel pictures are not cinema...because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration

What gives people more inspiration than heroes? Than good versus evil, with good usually winning? I'm sorry, but superhero films, which are generally for children, are the foundation of enlightenment and inspiration for kids. Please let's not forget these are movies for kids, so just as a side, calling them despicable is kinda petty.

"I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again"

Aside from the fact that I don't believe all superhero films are the same, but generally speaking, all stories are a retelling of another story. Ever hear of the hero's journey trope or a "Cinderella story"? Yeah. We actually do get something out of seeing the same movie over and over again, just like we do when we re-read a book or listen to the same song over and over.

As film makers, just get over how successful these popcorn films are and continue on in your own lane. I know it stings to see them making the millions. But suck it up.

reply

You make a good point about Hollywood retelling the same story regardless of genre.

reply

He did not say the same "story", but the same "movie".

reply

They're part right and they're part wrong.

reply

please explain.

reply

It's, of course, nonsense to say that we watch cinema for enlightenment, knowledge or inspiration. Most people just want to be entertained. This can be on an intellectual level, but also on a simpler level. Nothing wrong with that. Although, personally, I think the Marvel films even fail at that.

But he's not wrong in saying it's basically the same movie over and over again. And there are way too many of them at that. I would also love to see an end to this "invasion".

I have a much bigger problem with Scorsese disliking sites like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes and complaining in general about people criticising movies.

reply

I didn't realize Scorsese had a problem with RT and IMDB. These sites give movies a lot of free publicity, good and bad.

that makes him seem old and out of touch.

reply

And a person who has a thin skin.

I'm sure you won't hear him complain if the reviews for The Irishman turn out to be positive.

reply

I will never watch the following movies again. Godfather and Apocalypse Now. I detested with a passion Apocalypse Now! The same with Godfather. I didn’t waste my time with 2 & 3 or the others. But, I will watch the MCU cinemas again. I go to the theater to see them on the big screen with surround sound; I also purchase them. Not so with Scorsese and Coppola films except for Godfather and Apocalypse Now. No VHF or DVDs back then. Another movie, not theirs, Deliverance, was as disgusting as Apocalypse Now.

Coppola and Scorsese can stick it where the sun doesn’t shine!🤬
