People who die so close to their birthdays

Have you ever noticed how common it is that many people die within a month or so of their birthdays? Sometimes within just a few days? That has always creeped me out - why is the birthdate and deathdate so close?

Here are some celebrities (I found randomly on IMDB); some from this past year some from years past (birthdate/deathdate):

Valerie Harper - August 22 / August 30
Mary Tyler Moore - December 29 / January 25
Carol Channing - January 31 / January 15
Estelle Getty - July 25 / July 22
Bea Arthur - May 13 / April 25
Liz Montgomery - April 15 / May 18
Jean Simmons - January 31 / January 22
Jon-Erik Hexum - November 5 /October 18
Ed Sullivan - September 28 / October 13
Judy Garland - June 10 / June 22
Frank Gifford - August 16 / August 9

I did not know she had that

I believe she was first diagnosed during the first season of MTM Show. She lost her sight around 2013-14.

Both “Mary and Rhoda” died shortly after turning 80.

reply

Valerie Harper
She was funny and pretty too

reply

I don't mind if they die before their birthday. But dying shortly afterwards is just plain rude if you have gone to all the trouble and expense of buying them a present !

reply

Merle Haggard died on his birthday

i was going to come barging in here & say this sounds like confirmation bias induced balderdash, but a quick google search quickly turned up that there does seem to be a bit of a birthday effect that leads to a slight but seemingly significant increase in death around birthdays, possibly due to increased alcohol use or depression around those times.

it doesn't seem to be al that well studied, but it does indeed seem to be an actual thing that may possibly increase the possibility of death near your birthday, which is kind of drag.

If they just abolished birthdays people wouldn't have to get triggered...
