What did you watch this week cowboy? (10/06-10/12)

Howdi there partner, time to jump on that horse again!

My rodeo:

The Shepherd (2008 TV): This movie was better than nothing. As in; it’s better to watch this movie than watch nothing at all, which can’t be said of all JCVD movies of the past decade. That being said, the low-budget is apparent, the script is slightly less intelligent than the one I wrote in fifth grade of high school and it was predictable and borderline pathetic but hey, when your a fan you can enjoy most of it. My rating: 5.5-6/10

Real steel(2011 TV): This is a good father/son movie, if the son is between 5 and 10 years old and the son will enjoy it more than the dad but the dad will also be able to appreciate the quality of the filmmaking to a certain level. In our case, even the mom liked it. Personally, I thought I would’ve enjoyed the robots a bit more but I barely cared about the fights. My rating: 6.5/10

Around the world in 80 days (2004 TV): This movie is like someone telling you a joke but it takes two minutes and a half of intense and funny build up only to end with a punchline that kind of sucks. You laugh anyways, mostly because of all the effort that was put in it. In this case, the fact is, no matter all the remarkable efforts, this is not a hit. I read a review mentioning Johnny Depp for the lead role and, indeed, he would’ve been way better than this Coogan guy. My boy Jackie was there to save the day once more with his charms, charisma and martial arts moves. My rating: 5.5/10

Howdy Stonekeeper! It’s been a busy week for me but I have a couple to share.

In the Name of Love (1973)
This is a really well made Poliziotteschi film starring Oliver Reed with a fantastic score by Ennio Morricone. My only real complaint is the dubbing of Oliver Reed’s voice by someone other than himself. It’s par for the course in this genre but it seems like such a loss as Reed’s voice is so distinctive and wonderful. Solid film and recommended for anyone into 70’s Eurocrime.

Mountaintop Motel (1983)
This is an eerie low budget slasher filmed in Louisiana, where I am from, even though there are no mountains to be found here. There is a haunting synth score throughout accompanied by faint voices to add to dread at the right moments. I even found myself wanting to back up and make sure I wasn’t hearing things. I did enjoy this one and several times it even went against the common slasher tropes normally used in movies of this era.

reply

I haven't seen them but Mountaintop Motel looks interesting.

Howdy!

My ratings of what you watched:
Real Steel 7/10
Haven't seen the others you watched.

My ratings of what I watched:
Score: A Film Music Documentary (2016) 8/10
DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004) 8/10
The Last House on the Left (1972) 7/10
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) 7/10
Body Count (1986) 4/10
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003) 8/10

reply

I must say my chief complaint about Last House on the Left is the comic relief provided by the two bumbling cops and the accompanying music used every time they are on screen. Their presence really takes something away from the film. I agree with your rating of 7/10.

Edit:
I happened to meet Jaramie Rain who played Sadie at a convention last year but we did not get to talk about the film because it was so busy. Nice lady though.

Dodgeball: 6.5-7/10

Around the World in 80 Days: didn't like it.

Since it's been several weeks since I posted in this thread, I'm going to post my movies from the last two weeks.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again - Wasn't great to start, but ended up being good. (7/10)

Detachment - A substitute teacher who drifts from classroom to classroom finds a connection to the students and teachers during his latest assignment. Very intense and depressing. (8/10)

Any Given Sunday - One of the better football movies I've seen. (8/10)

I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (5/10)

8 Heads in a Duffel Bag - Not very well-known. Stars Joe Pesci and I thought it was quite funny. (7/10)

Farenheit 9/11 (7/10)

Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Really wanted it to be good, but it just wasn't. I couldn't care about anything that was happening. (6/10)

Climax (2018) - French dancers gather in a remote, empty school building to rehearse on a wintry night. The all-night celebration morphs into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn their sangria is laced with LSD. (8/10)

Cannibal Holocaust - Wasn't very gruesome for the most part, but it was just not good. (5/10)

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) - It was good, I thought it could have been better but had a few parts that weren't very interesting. (7/10)

Dances with Wolves - I was impressed by this movie. Really well shot and made. Didn't seem like it would be a good movie but it was. (8/10)

The Pursuit of Happyness - Good. A tough watch in some places. (7/10)

Exam (2009) - It was good, but I felt like I'd seen this movie at least 10 times already. (7/10)

Little Woods (7/10)

Little Monsters (2019) - A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies. Lupita Nyong'o was great as usual. Didn’t feel that Josh Gad’s character added anything substantial to the story. (7/10)

reply

Orphan (2009) - A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9 year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be. Really good. Kept me interested the whole time, but I thought the ending wasn't as good as it could have been. (8/10)

reply

I was so frustrated with the idiot husband not believing his wife. Connect the dots man!!

Good stuff homie

Any given sunday: 7.5/10
I really really really want to see Climax. Can't find it.
Birdman: First time I saw it was on my birthday so me and this movie share a special bond. Does have a few weak parts but for me it's more about atmosphere. 8/10
Dances With wolves: Of course! 8/10
The Pursuit of Happyness: 8/10

The Hunter (2011) - Martin, a mercenary, is sent from Europe by a mysterious biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for the last Tasmanian tiger. Dafoe was great in this. My problem with the plot is that got rid off the family very quickly and without explanation I thought. 7/10

Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) - In 1931, three half-white, half-Aboriginal girls escape after being plucked from their houses to be trained as domestic staff, and set off on a journey across the Outback. Man can be so inhumane ans this movie will bring it home. based on true events. Ken Branagh is great as the race oriented bureaucrat. 7.5/10

Meet John Doe (1941) - A man needing money agrees to impersonate a nonexistent person who said he'd be committing suicide as a protest, and a political movement begins. This has a 7.7 rating so I finally got around to it. It is very corny from today's perspective. The thing is that society and politics may change but there are certain things in humans that never change. The movie reminded me of Network and A Face In The Crowd. 7/10

Joker (2019) - In Gotham City, mentally-troubled comedian Arthur Fleck embarks on a downward-spiral of social revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his infamous alter-ego: "The Joker". I am not a comic book/superhero movie guy but this movie is good as a stand alone film. You feel sympathy for the joker at the beginning but that will go away as the movie progresses. Phoenix is great and will be nominated for best actor. The movie does have its political overtones and reminded me of a number of movies such as Falling Down and The Machinist. 7.5/10

Rabbit proof fence, wow that was a great movie I'd forgotten about. I'm going to rewatch it:)

I watched it at the recommendation of Laura.

The Hunter I own but haven't watched.

I I'll have to see Joker asap, no choice there.

The Fly with Vincent Price. Excellent film.

I only saw the remake and I love it.

That was the one with Jeff Goldblum. The original was much much better. Give it a try.

I just rewatched Ratatouille. It was the cheapest in room movie at the hotel, 9.99$.

My kids love that one.

I love that one

none of yours for me this week, rocker.

my week:

i walked with a zombie (1943) 3.5 a nurse turnes to voodoo to try to cure a patient. very neat early horror that works its spare, unsettling atmosphere very effectively.

contagion (2011) 3 i wanted to like this. it's a neat, chilly, brutally efficient film.
but it kept bothering me, partly because it was so self-serious at times with hollywood actors reciting technical & medical jargon, and it climaxed wtih a fucking u2 song.

instant family (2018) 4 absolutely funny & sweet. just a bit too sitcomish in its humor at times, but you'd have to be a bit of an inhuman monster not to be touched by it, no? heart solidly in the proper place.

space babes from outer space (2017) 3 fun sex comedy. cute girls, lots of boobs.

saturday the 14th (1981) 1.5 i didn't laugh once.
if a comedy never makes me laugh, i can't really say i enjoyed it, can i?

hunt for the wilderpeople (2016) 5 movies just don't get more lovable than this. like if rambo & crocodile had a very cute, shambolic kiwi baby.

run bitch run! (2009) 3 at around the 30 minute point, a hooker forces a catholic schoolgirl to go down on her at gunpoint, at which point i realized the couch in this film is identical to the one my parents had in their living room when i was growing up. kinda killed my mood.

this is incredibly sleazy, even by my standards. but fun. very 'i spit on your grave'-ish, & captures a 70s trash sensibility reasonably well.
they killed the cutest girl far too quickly though.

justice league (2017) 1.5 it's pretty weird of me to watch a movie as bad as this three times.

this is an astonishingly ugly film. dark & dreary & cheap looking, even though they apparently spent all manner of money on it.

the shooting (1966) 3.5 odd, very languid, borderline pokey western with jack nicholson & warren oates. while i'm not really sure i understood who these people were & why they did what they did, i very much enjoyed its spacey, weird pace, though i'm glad it wasn't a minute longer than its fairly brief running time.

american mary (2012) 4 why isn't every movie a katherine isabelle starring body modification rape-revenge horror? if you can do that why would you do anything else?

the only thing wrong with this film is that they take the very foxy tristan risk & make her ugly.

otherwise this is a very fun, weird low budget horror that i like more each time i see it.

demons (1985) 3 cute girls, fun gore. a bit repetitive, but overall a trashy good time.

demons 2 (1986) 3.5 improvement on the first one. still gets a bit dull & repetitive by the end, but it's got lots of gore & fun, silly looking monsters & a pretty hip soundtrack.

in the shadow of the moon (2019) 3 time travel/mystery. underwhelms a bit when you find out where it's going - if you've seen time travel films, you'll have a good idea of what's to come - and i think it could have used some tidying up plotwise, but...this clears the low bar set for straight to netflix films pretty easily. decent production values, reasonably paced & fairly involving.

x (2011) 3 hookers get mixed up with a drug deal gone wrong. enjoyably sleazy trash. could have been sleazier, but it was sleazy enough to make me happy. attractive women reasonably tight pace.

take out (2004) 3.5 early sean baker film about an chinese illegal alien in new york trying to pay off his trafficking debt. plods a bit in its middle section - you watch a lot of the same things over & over again - but it mines the same humanistic vein that you'll know if you've seen sean baker's more recent films. and it ends in a very understated but powerful way. definitely worth seeking out if you loved florida project & tangerine.

senna (2010) 4.5 i know nothing about formula 1, couldn't really care less about such things. i don't even drive, & have never owned a car in my life.

but i was interested in this film all the way through, & ultimately found it powerful & really quite moving.

if a movie can make you care & feel about something you think you have zero interest in, then it's done its job.

revenge (2017) 4 my admiration for this film has only grown on a re-watch. it's brutal & tough & looks fantastic.

black mountain side (2014) low budget canadian horror. one of my little beefs with films that take place in the north is when they don't properly depict just how bloody cold it can get. this definitely fails on that count. there are several references made early in the film to it being freezing out, but it's perfectly clear that it's not that cold, & none of the actors look uncomfortable, and aren't even that bundled up.

that out of the way, this is ok. it's really promising in the early going, has a good, creepy claustrophobic vibe that made me & will probably make you think of the thing. it doesn't quite fulfill that early promise, but it's still mostly fine & absolutely worth a watch for those like me that are always on the lookout for well made low-budget horror.
