Is Thanksgiving still a thing for most Americans?

It seems so old fashioned to me, like something that would have been big in the 50s.

How the idea of a family coming together to recreate a meal between Invaders and the conquered seems racist. And getting the women to cook, sexist. Surely it's not that big anymore.

reply

Canadian Thanksgiving is this coming weekend and I look forward to the family get together.

reply

Yes. Thanksgiving is time to come together to express gratitude for what we have. That's a good thing, not an old-fashioned thing.

reply

Very well said and I whole-heartedly agree.

reply

Of course!! Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing... why wouldn’t it be?

reply

Stuffing is my favorite!

reply

It’s like all the good things all at once. Plus pie.

reply

It's the only occasion someone makes a rhubarb pie, better than it sounds, though not my favorite

reply

I’ve never had rhubarb pie but I’d love to try it. My family always made the mincemeat pie which I hated. I always hated pumpkin pie til my later 20s and now it’s my favorite so I try to make up for all the years I missed by eating extra pumpkin pie on thanksgiving.

reply

Rhubarb is best with apple in my opinion unless you took the apple part for granted.

reply

Think of all the vegans!

reply

I try not to.

reply

Well, at least you tried...

reply

Lol

reply

Here you go... Vegan turkey. Yum!

Looks delicious.

It is very old fashioned, a time for distant relations to get together and have a feast...it's pretty sweet

It's certainly regrettable what happened to the Natives but they got a bunch of cash machine Casinos and tax breaks out of the deal so there is that...
Gotta look on the bright side I say

Who the hell said the wives and daughters do all of the prep and cooking?!?
If that's the case I'm working way too hard on all of these holidays;)

reply

I don't think people celebrate Thanksgiving to honor the pilgrims and the natives.

Thanksgiving, to most people, is getting together with family, eating a great meal and being thankful for what we have. Plenty of men do the cooking and help with the cleanup as well.

reply

Why would it be sexist for women to cook?? Most women I know look forward to and are proud of the meals they cook on Thanksgiving.

reply

Where I live turkey season is no where near Thanksgiving but Duck season opens earlier in November and in my opinion Duck is much tastier any day.

reply

Racist and sexist would be making the native women cook for us.
