Are blockbusters artistically under valued by cinephiles ?

I’m making this post because I’ve seen RDJ’s page here and many think his part as Iron Man is beneath his talent.

And disagree with even if he won’t get nominated for an Oscar for it. I think Iron Man is a very rich character to portray there is a lot emotions to do in it and also portraying any character for longer than one film involves the evolution of the character and changes into the personality.

RDJ is the one who gets the most comments about but I’ve seen many fans of many actors ohh he is not only that character like it’s embarrassing that their favorite actors are mostly known for a specific character.

Now also covering the directors work, doing a blockbuster has a lot of challenges like creating a specific place like Hawarts, Asgard, Wakanda.

The writers have to be creative to write the characters to appeal to general audiences who have never read the source the film is based on.

I’m not asking for those type of films to get award recognition but I’m just saying it’s sad a lot of cinephiles feel like blockbusters are not real movies. Or think those movies have no merits.

Some do appreciate those films and do feel happy that let’s say Hugh Jackman did Wolverine for so long and feel proud of that character their favorite actor did but some defend Hugh Jackman saying well he had to do this to finance his passion projects or do this so he can work on films he really likes.

I think I think many of these actors do feel honored and passionate about blockbusters as well.

I do think RDJ did give his all to Iron Man, Chris did with Thor, Ryan Raynolds with Deadpool, Ralph Fiennes to Voldemort. The Bond actors with James Bond.

I feel like those parts are as good to portray as let’s say Chaplin or Amon goeth, James hunt or any Oscar role they do.

He was perfect for iron man but it did effect his acting career in a bad way. Not in terms of money but he hasn't played an interesting character since the first iron man movie other then iron man. Once you are a moviestar you can't take risks anymore it seems.

reply

But the thing is I think Portraying Iron Man is good enough to show his acting skills he might not get an Oscar for it but did show his acting skills in this role.

He showed he can be funny serious and everything you can think. I think every opponent he might have missed to get an Oscar was compensated for for everything he did as Iron Man.

He did have artistic freedom and did show acting muscles in it during all this time he portrayed this character.

I'm not a superhero/comic book fan but even I can tell that Iron man and Wolverine are more complex than your average super bat man.

I think some people are just pretentious. They will rave about some painfully boring film going on about how great the camera angles or lighting are, dead giveaways that the film itself sucks.

And then they will pan films that only set out to entertain. Because these people think they are being intelligent.

reply

I am not a superhero/comic book movie fan. I don't take them seriously when considering movies of value.

reply

not trying to play gotcha, but genuinely curious: have you tried watching any of the more acclaimed ones? ie logan or into the spider-verse?

reply

I did watch Logan which was more of drama/thriller.

SEMANTICS

reply

You may think that but I think there is a difference between Logan and The Avengers.

.ABSOLUTELY THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOGAN AND AVENGERS,BUT...STILL ,LOGAN IS A "SUPERHERO" FROM A "COMIC BOOK" IN A "COMIC BOOK MOVIE"

reply

I wasn't aware that Logan was based on a comic book. I thought it was fine as a stand alone movie.

reply

ALL THE CHARACTERS AND LARGE CHUNKSOF PLOT AND DETAIL ARE PULLED DIRECTLY FROM CERTAIN COMIC BOOKS.IT CAN BE CONSIDERED A STAND ALONE FILM OR THE CONCLUSION TO WOLVERINES CINEMATIC JOURNEY.SEEING AS HOW PROF X IS ONCE AGAIN PLAYED BY PATRICK STEWART I CONSIDER IT THE LATTER.

reply

I had that discussion when the movie was released.

reply

ITS TOTALLY A STAND ALONE WATCH...OVERALL ITS A BOOKEND TO THE LOGAN SAGA THOUGH.

reply

did you like The Dark Knight?

reply

This came up in stonekeeper's game last week where I admitted I have not seen Dark Knight.

reply

try it. it's really just an epic crime drama. nothing like the Marvel movies. no super powers or endless cgi stuff.

reply

I will watch it.

reply

DARK KNIGHT IS COOL.BUT,OVERALL NOLAN'S WORK IS ALL OVERHYPED.

reply

ITS A GENRE,NOT A SHIT SENTENCE.

reply

WHAT?

reply

It's just a different approach with a different target. I don't like those films as much but I understand why others do. But it's hard to argue that participating in them has nothing to do with simply wanting a bigger check.

reply

I've met more than one hardcore cinephile who had seen countless foreign arthouse films but had never seen some very basic cinema. I think it's important to watch blockbusters just as much as it is to watch any other kind of film.

reply

I think they are but the term 'cinephile' makes me think of someone who takes themselves very seriously and is trying too hard to impress

Sometimes a big, loud and dopey blockbuster is a ton of fun

The Meg was a ridiculous picture and I really enjoyed it for instance

Agreed, I prefer the term film nut. Suits me anyway.

And of course blockbusters have a place in movies. Absolutely nothing wrong with being entertained by a big, dumb action spectacle. That said, you should be able to criticize them if they stink without being labelled a wanker.

reply

Ohh yes I’m not saying no one should ever criticize blockbusters, we can all express our opinions but I just don’t think Blockbusters should be generalized as a bad thing for cinema or be seen as a something with less value.

reply

And on that we agree my friend :)

reply

There are few things as snobby as a mutual admiration society of cinephiles.

reply

I would say blockbusters are among some of my favorites films such as Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
