Delta won't let pit bulls on airplanes

I don't see the controversy. I would never remain in an airplane seat in close proximity to an uncrated, unmuzzled pit bull.

I see nothing wrong with this. If a dog breed has the unpredictability and deadliness of a wild animal, then it should be classified as one, period. I don't understand this stupid mentality of thinking that pit bulls should be seen and treated as a domestic animal when it's as deadly and unpredictable as any grizzly or chimpanzee.

reply

Very dangerous breed. Sadly, also the most frequently abused and abandoned by their owners. Breeding pits should be banned and there should be mandatory spaying and neutering.

reply

Atomicgirl, WHAT?!!!!!!!
Pit Bulls are sweet dogs and no dangerous than any other dog. They were once the popular family pet before people started abusing them and training them to attack (which can be done with just about any breed). They even chose a pit bull for the show The Little Rascals because it was such a popular family dog back then.

Pit bulls have gotten a bad rap in recent years. The dogs to really watch out for are the Chows!!! But they don't seem or look or sound as threatening as a "pit bull" so it's not reported much, if at all.
But God forbid anytime something unfortunate happens with a pit bull, it's all over the news putting the false narrative out there that pit bulls are all bad. That is simply not true! Sure, pit bulls are being used and abused by people daily who can attack but the owners are the ones who should be getting all the heat, not these beautiful animals!

I have a pit mix and she's a loveable sweet angel. She's never bit anyone and I have several cats too--never bit them either.

The subject is really about responsible dog owners, not dangerous dogs!
It's ludicrous to compare a pit bull to a chimpanzee or grizzly. Please get your facts straight.

reply

About being a family pet, they actually used to be referred to as the "nanny breed" because they were so good with kids. Even Police Departments around the US are starting to change their tune.

reply

They're good at mauling kids, that's for sure.

Sounds like your falling for the medias over reporting of pit bull incidents. Funny they don't seem to care when it is another breed. But I guess that doesn't make a good story. Fact is, The American Temperament Test Society, who assesses the behaviors of dog breeds based on factors like aggressiveness gives pit bulls a passing grade.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier: 91.2% Pass Rate
American Staffordshire Terrier: 85.2% Pass Rate
Amercian Pit Bull Terrier: 87.4% Pass Rate

Based on statistics, pit bulls don't even make the list for "The top 5 most unruly breeds."

And on a personal note, I know someone who has run a Doggy Daycare for years and pit bulls have never been a problem. The biggest issues have been with Labradors, who are amazingly unmanageable when poorly trained.

reply

So you believe that other dog breeds fatally maul people at the same rate as pit bulls and those incidents are just unreported?

reply

No, but I do I think pit bulls have a better temperament than most dogs. It is reported on temperament tests that Pit Bulls had a passing rate of 82% or better — compared to only 77% of the general dog population. I think one of the main problems is that a lot of assholes own pit bulls and don't raise them properly. Walk into any hood and every other guy has one. As I mentioned above, even the Police are using them for K9 Units because they are such great dogs and don't cost an arm and a leg (pun intended) like a Belgian Malinois or German Shepherd.

I know dogs. I wouldn't advocate for a certain breed if I thought it was inherently dangerous. Anyone who is afraid of them should just spend some time around the breed.

reply

I have a pit mix and she's a loveable sweet angel.

So is this lion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXjtiDn4kVI

Now, look what happens when another lion that was a sweet angel its entire life snaps and attacks the very man who rescued and bottle-fed it from birth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR44f2SRWGE

The point is that it doesn't matter how lovable pit bulls are when they're not on the attack, but how unpredictable and dangerous they are when they are. Because pit bulls attack and kill like wild animals, they should be seen and views as wild animals.

reply

I don't click on links but they're both about lions which has nothing to do with pit bulls.
Pit bulls are domestic animals!

Again, this is all about how they are raised. Circumstances play a roll in it too. I'll give you an example. When I was a toddler my aunt who lived in the same apartment building we did invited me and my older brother to come see the newborn puppies her dog had. My mom ok'd it. We were eager to see these pups as you could imagine! Next thing I know, the mother dog decided to lunge at my face and put some decent holes in me to which I have scars from to this day.

Here's the circumstances--my stupid aunt left 2 little kids in the kitchen ALONE where the mother dog was right next to where her puppies were! My aunt immediately left us to go in her living room and did not supervise us at all OR remove the mother dog to a different location before we came to see them, which would have been the proper thing to do!
I never ever blamed the mother dog, nor did the experience make me fearful of dogs. She was protecting her puppies. By the way, she was a beagle mix but that kind of dog isn't scary enough to make the news. If you only heard that a toddler got bit in the face by her aunts dog it is likely people would think it was terrible and jump to the conclusion the dog must be bad. But when you know all the facts you might see things differently.

reply

pit bulls are banned here in Ontario.

reply

Smart.

reply

Lots of dogs bite. Why isn't Delta expanding the ban to other breeds, who have similar bite statistics?

My point is that there is no bad dog, just bad owners. Any untrained dog can have behavioral issues.

reply

A pug that's not properly trained won't rip your arm off if it snaps, though.

reply

A bite is a bite and can lead to a lawsuit no matter the breed.

And dogs snapping aren't isolated to just pitbulls, but we can thank the media for sensationalizing every story they can get their hands on.

reply

Really? A bite is a bite?

Yeah, some breeds are clearly more aggressive and dangerous than others, though.

reply

Legally speaking, yes, a bite is a bite. It doesn't matter if its a pug or a pit bull - either way its going to turn into a lawsuit for the airline.

Yes, some breeds are more dangerous than others, which is why I thought it strange they only banned one breed.

reply

You must be trolling. A pit bull killing someone and a pug nipping them is not going to be treated the same.

reply

Any dog that bites a passenger on an airplane is going to result in a lawsuit. How is that trolling? And I've never heard of a pit bull killing someone on a plane...

reply

I didn´t even know dogs on planes was a thing, I thought they always went in cargo. Whether a pit bull has killed someone on a plane is irrelevant. Since a dog on a plane has to be a rare event anyway. Pit bulls have killed people, pugs haven´t. That´s the difference.

reply

Pit bulls bite hard, but pugs are far more dangerous. They commit genocide.

reply

Lol.

reply

Yeah but how they could even possibly enact "bad pet owners" ban?
Lemme see... nuh, you're bad pet owner. No go.
You! You seemed like a good pet owner. On board, please.

reply

If the airline is that worried, they should ban all dogs. Banning a single breed does nothing but show their bias.

reply

Banning all dogs would hurt their bottom lime. They are bussineses, afterall. It's only logical.

reply

Unless your a veteran i don't believe in emotional support animals on planes. I assume that is why you would bring a pit bull on a plane.

reply

Sounds like a good policy to me.
