Actors who never met their full potential?

R. Lee Ermey - Although mostly typecast in military roles after his brilliant breakout in Full Metal Jacket, Ermey was actually a great actor with excellent comedic timing and very diversified range of emotions. I'm not sure if it was his fault, his agent's fault, or people in Hollywood only offering small cameo roles as angry military sergeants, but in an alternate universe, Ermey is being celebrated as a legendary actor beyond just Gunnery Sgt Hartman. David Fincher was very close to casting him as the villain in both Se7en and Zodiac because he was blown away by his audition tape but ultimately didn't due to the fear that people would only see Ermey as "that army guy". Such a shame.

Bill Paxton - I think people like Paxton, but his performance in One False Move is jaw-droppingly good. Gene Siskel called it the best performance of the year, and this was before Paxton was a known actor. He was also excellent in A Simple Plan and of course TV's Big Love, but other than some hits in the 90's that didn't really utilize his acting chops (ahem, Twister), Paxton never really broke out beside small co-starring roles. I really think eventually would've received an Oscar nom at some point had he not died so suddenly.

John Goodman
Kevin Bacon
James Gandolfini
Joe Pesci
Shia LaBouef
Samuel L.Jackson - fantastic actor when he's into role. Sadly,he that is very rare these days.

reply

Agreed with John Goodman. He was phenomenal in 10 Cloverfield Lane, easily the best part about that film by a very wide margin. The dude can act his ass off.

reply

Kevin Bacon? I dunno.

reply

I thought Bill Paxton was excellent, portraying a despicable character in Mean Dreams, his final film.

reply

Well shit, did Bill Paxton die? I haven’t seen Mean Dreams yet but I thought he had his moments. He was great in Big Love.

reply

Yes, Feb.25, 2017.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Big Love but I saw in a couple of rewatches recently, Predator 2 and Frailty.

reply

Yeah dude, frailty was good.

reply

Yes, the better of the two.

I know ryan gosling is a big star but as an actor he's getting worse. He used to be interesting in things like the believer and lars and the real girl. Now he's the same silent character in everything. As a young actor it can be death to your talent if you become a star.

reply

I think he’s still there. I think he’ll do great things to come as he matures.

R Lee Ermey was awesome. I used to watch him on Mail Call and Lock N’ Load and was always suprised by how genuinely funny and charasmatic he was. Even in Full Metal Jacket, he’s giving a genuinely perfect performance with top quality acting chops. The scene where he’s screaming at Pyle to get the fuck off of his obstacle course took serious acting ability to pull off convincingly, especially for a non-actor with little experience like Ermey. He comes off as genuinely irate during that scene, and not many could do that.

Tom Sizemore
Mickey Rourke

reply

Yes, yes, and yes.

matthew broderick

reply

Broderick, perhaps due to his style is kind of limited in a lot of ways. When I saw him in "Glory" it was like watching Ferris Bueller play soldier, he was probably a bad choice for the role except he resembles the officer he was playing.

Lindsay Lohan.
