The sixties - music was really taking off and everything looked exciting.

reply

The sixties were great! I was living in San Francisco at the time and went to all the Jazz Clubs where I met a lot of famous singers and musicians. It was a time of great change, protests against the war in Vietnam, etc. It was quite an experience. I loved the sixties!

reply

I would genuinely love to hear some stories about this if you’re ever up for it.

There were several jazz clubs in San Francisco (North Beach), the The Jazz Workshop, where Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, and Dizzy Gillespie held forth;
Basin Street West, where one could be in the royal presence of Duke Ellington and his orchestra;
Sugar Hill headlined big name blues stars like John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Willie Mae Thornton and T-Bone Walker; and
El Matador with top performers such as Charlie Byrd, Erroll Garner, the Modern Jazz Quartet, George Shearing, and Oscar Peterson.

I met Miles Davis and John Coltrane who were my favorite jazz musicians at the time. Fun days!

reply

Wow. What a time that must’ve been. I can’t even begin to imagine how cool that scene was. Did you see all those guys play? Did you get to see John lee Hooker?
If you seriously met Miles Davis AND John Coltrane, you are my hero.
This one’s for you oldtimer. Much respect.

I don't remember seeing Hooker, and yes I did meet Miles Davis. Those were the days. San Francisco is nothing like it was in the 1960s.

reply

What a great place to live, just at the right time to experience it all.

reply

Well I was a pre-teen and despised the hippies, and older adults who were touchy-feely New Age.

reply

No, don’t burst my balloon, maaaan.

reply

I was expecting a harsher reply and feel a little relieved at your good humor. I was a kid so take that opinion as a kid's one.

reply

Yeah, I’m just kidding. You know me, I’m not one for picking a fight. Besides, you were there and I wasn’t. I’m viewing the whole thing through rose-tinted glasses.

I couldn't stand what I call the "real" baby boomers either ( the ones born between 1945 and the early 1950's ) the political activists and the feminists in particular. They were arrogant, highly opinionated, in your face, my way or the highway nasty pieces of work. I didn't like the "tune in, turn on and drop out" layabout loser hippies either but they didn't do much damage to anyone but themselves, unlike the former group. And to think this miserable bunch of wreckers were spawned by the so called "greatest generation".

reply

I'll go with 2800 to 2400 BC, Sumeria. I'd like to hang wif Gilgamesh.

reply

I like the 50's, and love movies from that time period.

The cars, the hairstyles, the drive-in movies, the greasers vs socies, the music, hanging out at malt shops, MLK and the Civil Rights movement, the celebrities (Elvis, Marilyn, Jimmy Dean) pin-up girls, baseball at its peak (Mantle, Hank, Willie Mays), The literature (Salinger, Kerouac, Ginsberg)

Everything just seemed so much 'bigger' then. What a time to be alive.

Wish I could have experienced it.

Post WWII, I think it must have been great (OK someone will mention Jim Crow South). But except for that, and a few other things, I think 1946-1966 must have been great. I pick 1966 as the last year, after that the turmoil of the the 60s started.

Medieval.

reply

American Revolutionary War, but the Wild West is a close 2nd.

Could simply be the one I wait to live through & enjoy, therefore looking back at it & recollecting it as a favorite historical period I'd been a part of. I can't look at time periods I know nothing of first hand/know little details of living conditions & decide if it's my favorite or not.

I mean with just guessing/picking one (just for fun/to imagine it) I could say several, but I've never really tried weighing in/comparing any based on what I could gather from it or such.
