Have you ever written a fan letter to someone?

Who was it and did you get a reply?

reply

When I was about 8 years old. To Star Trek. I don't think it was addressed to a particular actor or character, I just don't remember. I got back a couple of signed photographs (I'm sure they must have been secretary-signed). Said photos are long gone.

reply

Aww thatโ€™s cute! Dear Star Trek... ๐Ÿ˜Š

reply

That is sooo sweet, awwww. ๐Ÿ˜

reply

Haha! Love it.

When I was 11 or 12 I wrote a letter to Andre Gower and I got a reply and a signed photo. I don't remember what was said and I think I got rid of the photo 20 years ago.

One I wrote to an author of a book that had inspired and moved me.

It was probably a few months later when I received a handwritten card, but I could barely read the writing so it wasn't until months after that I realised it was from him.

Similar experience here. I bought a random book from the Barnes and Noble discount rack that I ended up really enjoying, so I sent the author a quick email. She replied back saying that my message made her day. I don't even remember what the book was called, but I hope she's still at it.

reply

Wow that's pretty cool you got a handwritten card (poor handwriting aside). What was the book (if you're willing to share)?

reply

Josh Demuth (motocross). He never wrote back!

I once wrote a mocking email to a Dutch tv personality about how he ruined a decades old theme park attraction with his newly added narration. He then went to Twitter to cry about.

Anyway, I got my wish, because not long after they went back to the old narration.

No and probably for the reason that writing letters is a thing of the past of my time/generation. I grew up in the computer age, so I would never have had that motivation. Everything was computer based/electronic and nowadays even more so.

Writing letters is definitely very old-fashioned you could say. Not saying it's bad, but it's something that would've never really occurred to me as being an ideal method of communication/addressing/etc. when I had a computer in front of me and social media and etc. Writing any kind of letter in these situations growing up and today seem to be the last thing most people think of.

Which is why a real snail-mail letter might stand out! It might not get overlooked as an e-mail in an ocean of e-mails might. But even though I grew up with letter writing, I haven't written a real letter in 20 years.

reply

The only letter-based mailing I remember doing personally is with a church when I was in my teens. It didn't last long and wasn't really out of pure interest, but it's the only time I remember writing letters besides maybe ones to Santa Claus or something when I was really small. Writing real letters (by hand especially) seems pretty "ancient" these days/uncommon.

But yeah, personalized letters would probably stand out more/have a bigger "wow factor" to most.

When I was a kid I wrote letters to a couple of people in show business that I liked. I never got answers.

I wrote a letter to George H. W. Bush in High School urging him to drop 'The War on Drugs' as it was impossible to win, was creating corruption amongst the authorities and would require billions in conventional weapons and secret ops which would likely violate the U.S. Constitution

My brilliant 18 year old advice to the former CIA boss and VP was 'legalize ALL of it, hey, let them have all the heroin and crack they crave..
There wont be a doper left alive in 10 years and we'll be done with this whole, sorry business'

He never got back to me:/

reply

Haha that's hilarious. In all seriousness though, we should at least decriminalize possession of all drugs. It makes no sense to put people in jail for addiction. Treat it like a medical issue and not criminal. Worked for Portugal, could work for us.

reply

I agree with this still...they're going to get the stuff no matter the risk
