I do especially for the UK crime dramas I watch. Also for Australian shows. Sometimes the sound of a movie is of poor quality. The movie High Life comes to mind.

I have never had the need to in English, but there have been a few times when trying to learn a language when I have been able to watch with two sets of subtitles.

reply

Yes. Saves a lot of rewinding.

reply

Sometimes if I’m watching the movie for a second time I will turn on the subtitles for scenes I couldn’t understand what was being said the first time around.

reply

Yes! It all started with The Full Monty because I could barely make out what they were saying.

Then it became a habit when I started watching Mad Men, because in it *everything* counts and I didn't want to miss any of the dialogue.

Usually I just watch normally, and when there's something I missed, I go back and read the subtitles if they're not still on the screen.

reply

Sometimes, yes, especially if the actors talk fast or with a foreign accent. I don't want to miss anything.

reply

It do it when the dialogue is quiet and THE SOUNDS ARE SO LOUD. I put the volume low so the sounds and the music don't give me a heart attack and put the subtitles on

reply

Always, yes. There's sometimes quite a bit of underlying dialogue that you wouldn't even know existed unless you had the subtitles on. A few rare exceptions are if I simply don't care what's going on in a movie I've seen a hundred times. But if it's something I haven't seen before, subtitles are always on.
