Strange Days (1995) - Kathryn Bigelow 7/10
The Seduction of Mimi (1972) - Lina Wertmüller 8/10
Spoor (2017) - Agnieszka Holland, Kasia Adamik 8/10

reply

I've seen Bend it Like Beckham (6/10) and The Seduction of Mimi (6/10). I haven't seen the other ones, but have seen An Education (2009) by Scherfig and seen 2 or 3 films directed by Bigelow.

reply

I've watched Strange Days several times over the years. If I had rated it in 95 it probably would have been a 10/10. It hasn't aged all that well, and my taste in movies has changed, but I still really like it. So I think I've probably overrated it. Nostalgia can do that though. Some of Bigelow's other films I don't like as much.

I liked An Education. I really like Carey Mulligan though.

reply

Please watch Strange Days if you can. I rathe it 8.5-9/10

reply

I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'll pass on the rating

reply

I loved The Virgin Suicides and You Were Never Really Here. The Rider is great too. I haven't seen High Life, but I've seen 2 of her other films. I haven't seen Can You Ever Forgive Me? but have seen 1 of her other films.

scarlett diva (2000) - asia argento 3.5/5 very ragged, but in a way i really enjoyed. almost like someone putting their journal entries on film.
meek's cutoff (2010) - kelly reichardt 4.5/5 i'd say this is the best of her many great films. edit to say that this is clearly the wrong thing to say, because wendy & lucy is by far the best reichardt.
the love witch (2016) - anna biller 5/5 about the fifteenth time i've watched it. pretty much exactly what i want movies to be.
head count (2018) elle callahan 3.5/5 pretty good twilight zone supernatural mystery
the babadook (2014) jennifer kent 4/5 liked it more on a rewatch

i had to go back through 80 films to find 5 directed by women.

reply

I've seen the love witch (7/10) and the babadook (8/10). I haven't seen the other ones, but have seen 1 of argento's other films and 2 of reichardt's other films.

Zero Dark Thirty
Detroit
The Virgin Suicides
The Babadook
Nancy

reply

I've seen Zero Dark Thirty (9/10), The Virgin Suicides (9/10), and The Babadook (8/10). Haven't seen Detroit or Nancy, but I'm considering watching them at some point. What would you rate Detroit and Nancy? Are they worth watching?

reply

Detroit was Oscar worthy material but it got completely overlooked. May have something to do with the subject matter. I gave a 7.5/10

Nancy is a small indy production. Heavy on the drama and dialogue. 6.5/10

reply

I just finished watching Nancy. I really liked it, 8/10 from me.

reply

i liked nancy. extremely dour, but absolutely worth a watch. i rated it 3.5 on letterboxd.

Ishtar, 5/10
Love, Gilda, 8/10
Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes, 8/10
RBG, 7/10
A Wrinkle in Time, 5/10

reply

I loved A Wrinkle in Time. I haven't seen the others you mentioned.

reply

I wanted to like Wrinkle in Time after I read the book, which was beautifully written by the way, but I couldn't. The CGI was distractingly bad, the screenwriter diluted the book's original message, and I wasn't impressed with one of the child actors.

'tigers are not afraid' from the mexican writer/director issa lopez was added to shudder today, & i just finished watching it.

i just posted this message on its own board, but i thought i'd share it here as well since it's in keeping with the theme of this thread.

i absolutely loved this.
the only reason this is not a 5/5 for me is because there were a few parts that i felt ought to have been really emotional that didn't quite land.

but this is really a fantastic film, truly great, and, if i can use this word without sounding too wet, really beautiful. will probably remind you of del toro at times, but is also its own unique, very powerful creation.

no one needs to listen to me, but if you think you'd like to see something that has the feel of pan's labyrinth at times, but is also its own entity, i'd highly recommend it.

reply

Sounds good. I will have to check it out.
