Comedic actors who are meant to be hilarious but you disagree?

My list could be rather long, I am not into what I call dumb ass comedy the sort of stuff Adam Sandler makes, so some "comedic actors" who I do not find amusing at all. Keen to hear others lists as well.

Adam Sandler
David Spade
Will Ferrell
Jim Carrey
Ben Stiller
Zach Galifiankis
Steve Carrell
Jonah Hill
Steve Martin
Chevy Chase
Seth Rogan
Mike Myers
Jack Black
Chris Rock
Chris Tucker
Jason Segal
Will Smith
Vince Vaughan
Rob Schnieder
Sacha Baron Cohen
Martin Short
Seth MacFarlane (Ok, he can be funny but his films are awful)
Whoopi Goldberg
Rebel Wilson
Ellen Degeneres
Amy Schumer

Do you find Dave Chappelle funny?

reply

His stand up yeah it can be.

reply

A lot of the same ones on your list. The ones that I've heard, anyway.

But I did think Will Smith was hilarious in Men in Black. Tommy Lee Jones was too, even though he's not known for being a comedic actor.

I think Ellen Degeneres is very funny too.

Can't think of any others ... oh wait, I never thought Andy Kaufman was very funny either.

Can’t believe that Tom Greene (Who?) isn’t on the list. And Chris Rock is hilarious.

Who the hell thinks of Rebel Wilson as a stand-up comic? A stand-up laughingstock, on the other hand . . . Yowsa.

reply

I don't know who any of those guys are. Chris Rock I've heard of, but haven't heard.

reply

Chris Rock HBO Special, years ago:

“I hear guys say, ‘I’m proud I ain’t gone to jail.’ You AIN’T S’OPSED TO BE GOIN’ to jail!”

Pure gold.

Jerry Seinfeld.

On 'Seinfeld' it seemed to me he was the straight man and the other actors were the comedians. And his "stand-up" pieces at the start of the show were ordinary at best.

Robin Williams.

I found his his brand of supercharged lunacy was about as funny as a strangulated hernia. A great dramatic actor though.

Jerry seems like an "every man" type to me really ordinary, similar in a way to Tom Hanks, bland, inoffensive.

Whether it's the affect of hindsight or not Robin Williams humour/style now screams depression. Like he is trying to get away from something/distract himself. I saw a doco on him a few months back and there are moments when you can clearly see there is something wrong with him.

I think he would have made a good Joker actually for that reason.

reply

Yeah good comparison. Seinfeld is a competent actor and a genial straight man in a comedy but not so much a comedian himself.

Robin Williams seems to have been a largely tragic figure. He and Billy Connolly were friends. Billy was a mess on the booze battling his demons while Robin was in the same boat with booze and cocaine.

reply

Billy was slightly more toned down in comparison but still similar I agree. Another comedian who seems to suffer from depression is Ross Noble.

I remember when Club Paradise came out in 1986 Robin Williams was either on Carson or Letterman saying that no one goes to his movies. It seems that when he started to tone his humor down and played more dramatic parts is when he made his most successful films.
