Sequels / remakes better than the original?

Obviously based on your own criteria/personal taste...

Toy Story 2
Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan
Scarface (1983)
Terminator 2

The Blob. This is one of the rare movies that surpassed the original in every way. *This* is how you do a remake.

Aliens. The first was good, but Aliens upped the ante considerably.

Terminator 2. Ditto.

National Lampoon's European Vacation. I don't know why this one gets so maligned, because I always thought it was better than the first movie, which was too dark/mean-spirited.

Sicario 2

Catch-22 (19) on the HULU is far superior to the Mike Nichols/Alan Arkin film from 1970...that was a fine movie with a great cast and mostly followed the excellent book but the HULU 6 part series features amazing performances by a largely unknown cast and it is brilliant...The new Catch-22 positively buries the 1970 film...all of of the humor, horror and thrills are right up front in every scene

I should add that nothing is as frightening and beautiful as a squadron of B-25 bombers lifting off and steering into formation...what a sight to see!

Although I love the original, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) with Donald Sutherland tops it

Completely agree
The remake was perfect and pretty scary

i like both of them too, & i'd agree that the 70s version is the best.
i remember liking the version from the early 90s quite a bit as well.

The Empire Strikes Back and Aliens are the only two I can think of that I've seen.

There are a lot of people who passionately think the original The Woman in Black is far superior to the remake. I like them both, for different reasons. To me the original is better in some ways, and the remake better in others.

i think each of the films in the new planet of the apes series was better than the one that came before it. i like all of them, but i think each one was more exciting, emotional & satisfying that its predecessor.

i personally like blade runner 2049 more than the original.

both paddington films are terrific, but #2 is one of my favourite films of all time.

fury road is by far the most exciting mad max film to me. i'm sure this is an outlier opinion, but i've always found the road warrior a touch underwhelming.

I thought The Raid 2 was better than the first.
