Is Shawshank deserving of all of its praise?

I think it is, but I’m sure plenty of people don’t

It's easily in my top 2 or 3 favorite movies so for me it's deserving of it. The novella was also great but I always felt this was one of the rare cases where the film was better than the book.

No. 8/10 at best.

Why? Acting wasn't that good. Freeman was excellent, everybody else come as wooden.
Robbins was average at best. Always same face with no emotions. Like in many movies.

LOT of elements are used from older movies.(Especially Escape From Alcatraz).

Also, some crazy coincidences. How the hell Dufresne never got transfered into another cell in 19 YEARS??
Ho come nobody of Andy's friends never died in prison?

reply

His friend got shot and died in prison.

Tommy was killed in cold blood. I was thinking about dying from old age or illnes. Possible suicide.

It's the number one rated movie on imdb. I can think of several that are better.

reply

No, Prometheus is the better film!

reply

Yes, I believe that it is deserving of all its praise.

Different Seasons, the collection of four novellas which contained 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,' was one of my favorite books by Stephen King. I loved every story in it.

I greatly admired the film Stand By Me, which was based on 'The Body,' another story in Different Seasons.
That being said, I still think that Shawshank was the best book to screen adaptation of a Stephen King story ever done.
Granted, there are other terrific films from Stephen King books like Carrie and The Dead Zone, but Shawshank is still tops for me.

reply

Yes, without a doubt. I would have given the Best Picture Oscar to Shawshank. Or Quiz Show.

Yes it is! It's a great film!

It taps into the feeling of being boxed in and yearning for freedom, much like The Matrix. This idea seems to have huge resonance with many people.

On top of that the storytelling is perfect and all filmmaking aspects are top quality.

What more can you ask for?
