Best excuse for calling in to miss work?

Sickness is overused and what if they ask for a doctor's note? How about car problems (battery died). I highly doubt employer would ask for car repair bills.

One time I told my boss that my grandmother had died even though she was alive and well so I could miss a day of work to go to Universal Studios. When I returned to work the next day there were flowers and sympathy cards on my desk and my coworkers offered their condolences to me all day long. I really felt like an ass and never used that excuse again.

How awful. And what if the boss finds out she's still alive?

I wasn't too worried about that as I didn't socialize with by boss outside of work. What did concern me was what would happen if my grandmother really did die later. I would have been screwed!
