Do you think we will ever become one world (similar to Star Trek)?

I think it’s possible, but not in my lifetime.

reply

No chance. Didn't you guys vote to leave the EU?

reply

As I said, not in my lifetime.

reply

I prefer the existing nation state form of government. The more local government is the more effective it is. Besides I don't want Russia or China running things.

reply

As things stand now, yes I agree. I have high hopes for the future though.

its impossible . people need conflict / tribalism / teams etc
they need a "us and them"
hence sport

reply

But what if we did eventually discover an alien race? Might that not redefine them and us?

reply

maybe .
Then we'd pick a fight with them , and lose.

reply

Anyone who has ever owned a co-op, condo, or is part of a Home Owner's Association (HOA) can probably tell stories about how difficult it can be to make decisions. Things at times can get quite contentious. Most people want nothing to do with the running of the place, will never volunteer to do anything, like be on the Board.

Yet we think the whole world can be run from a center of power? Perish the thought. It won't be like Gene Roddenberry's vision. It will be closer to a Police State. Say goodbye to free speech as we know it in the USA. Perhaps say goodbye to property rights as we know it here. Say goodbye to freedom. If you think this is an exaggeration, imagine the world being run by the corrupt clowns at the U.N. We are spoiled here in the USA. Many, maybe most, people don't live with our freedoms, with our traditions of Liberty. And if you think that such repressive countries will change for the better under a single order, think again.

reply

I’m a little more hopeful (naive?) than that. Who knows what wonders we’ll come up with in the future (as long as we don’t blow ourselves to kingdom come before then).

reply

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that human nature is human nature and has remained so throughout the ages. To believe that human nature can be changed is naive, but I'm not saying you said that.

reply

The eternal optimist in me thinks that, as a race, we’re on the cusp of true greatness. Hopefully, we’re due to make a discovery or invent something of truly cosmic proportions. Either that or we end up like the film Idiocracy

Well said, nyctc7! I couldn't have said it better myself! Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It would be a friggin' NIGHTMARE!

👍👍👍

My parents were friends with a great-grandson of Lord Acton.

reply

Outstanding. Lord Acton was a great man, and very intelligent!

😎

reply

I hope so, we have great promise
I've always believed this would one day be true...as you say, well after our lifetimes of course

Consider how many of us have romanced across racial, political and religious lines despite upbringing
There wont be 'black and white, yellow and red' in a few more hundred years
We will be a very good looking mix and the racist nonsense from all sides will end...and I bet the babies will be very cute!

Politically, I'd hope we can stamp out communism and the welfare state
Those people who are truly in need will be provided for but everyone else works and earns...It's the right way...
Follow the US Constitution...basic human rights, religious freedom, a free press...all of that

We'll get there, we have to
Too bad we'll be considered 'ancients' by then😉

I hereby nominate ShogunofYonkers for President, United Federation of Planets!

reply

Umm...That's 'Supreme Beloved Leader and President for Life of the United Federation of Planets'

Thank you😬

reply

🖖

reply

That's exactly the high five I will require under my new government
🖖!

reply

We’ll probably end up looking Spanish.

reply

I could live with that, except I might not be alive😬

reply

No. I think the world will eventually split into two very different groups, similar to what is depicted in the movie Elysium.

reply

Or if things really go down the pan, like the two races in The Time Machine.

reply

I certainly hope not. I do NOT want to be ruled by someone halfway around the world. No thanks!

😎

reply

Not right now - we’re not ready for it, but maybe, just maybe, one day in the distant future things may be different (either that or we end up with Charlton Heston, thumping his fists on a beach, saying, “you blew it up”).

reply

I'll reiterate that human nature will not change. The seven deadly sins will always lurk among some. Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride. Even among social justice warriors. We are human.

The best we can do is make good humans. I mean parents instilling good values in their children, and that may or may not involve religion.

reply

And that’s how it works now. Who knows what the future holds? Cloning? Having the power to genetically erase negative emotions (I’m not saying I subscribe to these notions, just saying that it could happen)?

reply

It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future.

reply

But that’s what makes it so fun.

reply

Hopefully very distant.

😎

reply

I hope not. People often talk about diversity but if we have all mixed together, where is the diversity? What separates Spain from Ghana or Mexico from Japan?

reply

that makes no sense

reply

What I'm saying is if every culture mixed and matched, there would be no distinguishing factors for these cultures. Let's say a bunch of white people moved to Nigeria, it could get to the point where Nigeria is no longer a black majority country.

I'm from Toronto and in 1989, only 18% were visible minorities. Now it's 51%. Just imagine if every city in every country did this.

reply

Would that be a bad thing, ultimately (just playing devil’s advocate).

reply

I think so. I'm a white dude who is a huge fan of Japanese Cinema. I don't want to see a bunch of white dudes in Japanese movies.

reply

Yes, but that’s now. Imagine a car flung future where there’s no racism, no borders, no religion - it might just happen.

reply

Unlikely. People form religious, social, cultural, regional, class, ideological, etc. groups. Diverse peoples will live together in harmony (maybe), but won't blend together making everyone the same. Regions of the planet prefer to be homogeneous like Japan. Most are not going to give up their religious beliefs.

reply

Thinking about it RELIGION is the main reason why the OP's suggestion will never happen

reply

Atheism is increasing.

reply

Bigotry and racism disguised as religion is the problem.

The same goes for other beliefs, ideologies and practices that cause harm and not do good.

Being at peace while living is the hardest thing to do. Death certainly brings peace.

Beliefs of all kinds or expressing no belief mean nothing if there is no true secularism, no freedom of the press.

EDIT:
Lack of belief changed to 'no belief' due to the former implying judgement, which is necessary to discern proper context from unintended meaning.

reply

As I said, I'm from Toronto and 51% of the population are visible minorities. There is still quite a bit of racism here. Racism will never stop. It's just part of DNA. It's the same way women are 50% of the population pretty much anywhere but there is still sexism.

reply

But attitudes are changing, albeit slowly.

reply

I agree. Humans find excuses to create a hierarchy with a few on top and others on the bottom of it. In order to have one, differences are used and exploited.

I think the living situation is slowly improving for some on the bottom, but I don't see a complete utopian and egalitarian society like in Star Trek.

reply

What separates Spain from Ghana or Mexico from Japan?

An ocean?

reply

Yeah, but what separates the ocean?

reply

Moses?

reply

Yes.... but only because bio-engineered plagues will wipe out all the undesirables.
