For me, Stephen Colbert. I can’t watxh him every night, as I’m not always in the mood to hear about Trump, but I rate him above the others.
PAST - David Letterman. I never really got into Leno. Not my type of guy.

Me, too. Dave Letterman was the last of the greats...but even he got too partisan towards the end.

A proper comedian should speak to the absurdity of all of it and not choose sides...choosing sides and playing to the peanut gallery strikes me as easy and cheap

Agreed. "Easy and cheap," what is sometimes referred to as low-hanging fruit...something to be relied on in a pinch but not make up one's whole act!

shareI don't get to see any these days as it's not a thing where I live now. But in the past my favorite that I never missed was Conan.
Second favorite was Jay Leno although I didn't totally love everything about him. But it could be a funny show with some laughs, and was comfort-food viewing to go to bed to then catch Conan afterward, back in the day.
I also liked Letterman but slightly less than the other guys.
