Essentially I can't argue with that and I agree, nothing beats the sheer size of the screen and the top-of-the-line sound system only an actual movie theater can have.

But for many people, the audience these days is becoming so intrusive to the experience of watching a movie in that setting, that even a much inferior home set-up is preferable for the overall experience of getting immersed into a movie.

These days, I'll take a humble widescreen TV at home with zero distractions, over a great theater system but a bunch of jerks taking calls and texting and talking out loud, sad to say.

I find that the time I go to the movies makes a big difference. If you can go to Matinees when there aren't big crowds, it helps.

When I used to go, I only ever went to matinees - but in my area, unfortunately, there are a lot of people who do. While those showtimes are not as crowded as the evenings, there are still enough people that things get boisterous and intrusive. Big busy city means even matinees can have a lot of people.

When the audiences realize their in a public theater and not in their living rooms, and therefore behave somewhat politely, then I'll return to the movie theater.

I just can't see buying a ticket to a movie, and having the experience ruined for me by everyone around me talking out loud, talking on their phones, videoing the screen, have their kids cry and scream (at an R-rated movie, but they don't want to pay a babysitter), or have their kids running around the theater (at an R-rated movie). It's gotten totally out of hand - and movie theaters do nothing about such behavior. (BTW, this is going on at live theater productions too, but the house managers and ushers do stop it immediately).

Many people I know who don't go to the movies anymore cite the same reasons as I do for not wanting to go to the cinema anymore. (We're all between 50 - 65 and loved going to the movies in the 80s and 90s).

Agreed. Wanna know whats really funny though? Im 29 and the last time I had this problem, it was three gabby women in their 60s who talked through the whole previews!

I wont let strangers keep me from going to the movies. Id be a shut in if I let others ruin my time.

But yeah I definitely cant blame ya

I love going to the movie theater but I rarely go now because I often will hear people talking over the movie and it really distracts me. It wouldn’t be a problem if the theaters would turn up the volume. I do go to the IMAX because they do play the sound loud. Unfortunately a lot of the type of movies that interest me don’t have IMAX releases.

I also think that the lit up screens of cell phones is super distracting as well. I wish people understood that everyone behind them can see their phone it up.

Same here. I don't go anymore for two reasons: all of the above behavior of other people, and also the ticket price now is so expensive, even for a daytime showing, that in my area it's now practically the same price as buying the Blu-ray!

That's just it! We're paying so much money for a ticket, and theaters do nothing to make our experience enjoyable. Once you purchase the ticket, 'you're on your own' - they've let the patients take over the asylum.

I do go to New York quite a bit and catch some Broadway shows while I'm there. Tickets, of course, are not cheap. Yet when the audience misbehaves, they do have professionals handle each situation - so it rarely gets out of hand. Your attention is on the stage, and the experience is enjoyable. You don't mind paying so much money for the ticket.

I stream nearly everything, almost never buy physical media and only visit the theater a handful of times a year
The couple next to us during Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood had to shimmy by me and my wife twice to go pee or whatever...SUPER annoying!
As the credits rolled they got up right away and that porker husband and I looked at each other and I shook my head
They shimmied their way to the opposite side of the row (I was on the end;)

People are really awful, simply selfish

I used to feel the same as several other posters about inconsiderate people ruining the cinematic experience. The answer - I now go mid-week, either late morning or early afternoon. It’s almost like having my own private cinema; glorious!
