Great Influences That Led To Bad Movements

For example, a lot of those college nerds in the 70s said they were influenced by The French New Wave, but what they did (for the most part) wasn't very good. It turned to "Jaws" and "Star Wars" which is Kurosawa influenced only in looks only. Kurosawa's movies are great regardless of look. They are great because the writing and acting is great, and he usually had good stories.

Blair Witch (1999) led to a bunch of really bad found footage horror movies.

Good one
FF really is mostly junk

There might be some pretty crappy movies, but I admit they are such a guilty pleasure of mine.

Many would say that Cannibal Holocaust is the first found footage movie. There were 3 others in the 80s. And I think Paranormal Activity is where it really started taking off. There were 18 released after it came out before 2010 even hit.

I agree about Cannibal Holocaust being the first, but as it was only part of the whole movie, I think it was the Blair Witch that showed film makers what could be done. I don't think that PA would have been done without the Blair Witch.

It was not the first found footage movie. The first one was David Holzman's Diary, except that one was a dark comedy: https://filmsdeconstructed.wordpress.com/2017/10/16/david-holzmans-diary-1967-the-first-found-footage-film/

And Blair Witch seems to have been inspired by Man Bites Dog. Yes, Cannibal Holocaust was the first horror FF film but that movie (Man Bites Dog) only came out a few years earlier: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103905/, and there are scenes that are somewhat similar.

Kurosawa was not French New Wave.

reply

I never said he was

Did neo-realism (De Sica, Rosselini and other Italian influenced) ever influence anything 'bad'?
