Disney's live-action Lady and the Tramp remake going straight to Disney+

This is one of the few of Disney's live-action remakes that actually got me excited and it's going straight to Disney+? What is this bullshit?

Why no theatrical release? And does this mean it's going to feel more like a TV movie than a big-budget production?

They want you to get Disney+. That's how they get you.

Obviously that's true, but it also sounds like they don't have faith that Lady and the Tramp will have the blockbuster potential of the other stories that have been adapted. Because if they did, I have to think that they'd be pushing it out to theaters for another huge payday.

I would agree that it wouldn't make as much money as, say, Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, but what about Cinderella? Cinderella made over $500 million and I think Lady and the Tramp is a more interesting story.

That's not good news if it's going straight to some obscure tv service. It means that it was so bad as to be seen as box office poison and not good enough for the big screen.

They definitely haven't all been winners.

Even though their live-action remakes have done huge numbers, Aladdin and The Lion King were not universally embraced by the critics.

That thought crossed my mind as well. I hope it's not the case though, as Lady and the Tramp is probably my favorite Disney animated feature of all time.

My hope is that they just think that the property isn't well-known/beloved enough by today's audiences to do huge numbers at the box office so instead they figure they'll use it as a hook for Disney+. I didn't even know they were working on this film and hadn't seen anything in the news about it, which is weird because I remember seeing all kinds of news for The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

I guess ultimately time will tell and we're just going to have to see how it turns out. Looks like it's scheduled for release in November.
