How long do VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays last?

Are there any studies done on this?

A lot of people think if they buy a DVD that they own the movie forever, but realistically that depends on how long the disc is readable.

Earlier DVDs had real gold in them and they would supposedly last 100 years. After the price of gold skyrocketed it was cost prohibitive to make them like that. The ones without gold are good for a few decades at best

I hear the span ranges from 30-100 depending on where it's stored.

At least vhs tapes don't scratch, some dvds just stop playing.

My VHS casettes are 40 years old and still playing without scratch, I can't imagine they'd just stop playing all of a sudden at least within the next about 60 years, it would not surprise me if the oldest of them all like VHS would outlast them at the end, the more we go into the past the more we find out how things were built to last a lot more than most recent things.

Msuic CDs seem to last forever

I have DVDs that already have disc rot and won't play.

I have DVDs and CDs that are 20+ years old and they are still good.
