Just watched “Taxi Driver” for the first time

I’m not sure if it’s movie I’m going to need to revisit a whole lot. But I enjoyed it. I took the ending at face value, that it’s reality, you?

reply

Yes, I never bought the other interpretations.

I read somewhere that the screenwriter said the ending is 100% true. But my buddy think he could be lying. I mean, maybe? But that seems like a silly thing to lie about

My only complaint about the film is that it doesn’t give Iris much of a backstory

Face value
Improbable...maybe, but in NYC during the 70s not terribly unlikely

I think ending was his dying dream.

How could he not to be in prison after he killed 4-5 people with illgeal gun? Even for movie standards, this was off.
Sorta kind of Birdman ending. It's still debatable.

reply

that's what I thought.

Your probably right, but cops were pretty crooked back then. Maybe when they realized this random guy who didn't even have a criminal record, rescued a young girl and took out of bunch of violent pimps, they looked the other way. Unlikely, but a possibility.

It's not really debatable when the creative forces behind confirm that it's all real.

In fact, De Niro had been trying to get a sequel off the ground for years. Schrader didn't like the idea b/c he thought Bickle would've died within 6 months in some new crazy outburst. De Niro wanted to explore what Bickle would be like decades later.

I don't see what some others do in the end. It seems obvious to the last frame what's going on. There's gonna be more of this. He's not done.

I was never able to figure out the ending. Maybe it was a dream, or reality? Who knows.
