What do you think is the most universally liked movie?

Obviously not every single person is going to like every movie, but which do you think is loved more than others? I pick The Shawshank Redemption.

reply

Back to the Future maybe

However, I think Shawshank is probably the correct answer

reply

Someone here brought up that there are no women in it so women might not like it as much which is why we came up with Forrest Gump as another movie.

reply

Yeah, Forrest Gump might have a more universal appeal. However, some people might not like very long movies like Forrest Gump.

My wife loves Shawshank though.

reply

Personally I think The Shawshank Redemption is a near perfect movie while Forrest Gump has a few problems.

reply

I, too, prefer Shawshank. However, I can see Forrest Gump may have broader appeal.

That said, I propose Jurassic Park as one most universally loved movie. It's fun, thrilling, good for kids and adults alike, or any gender, has interesting and imaginative subject matter, and not overly long. With a catchy theme song too!

reply

Good choice. I love that movie and didn't even consider that one.

reply

Just... disregard the sequels and the reboots.

reply

I eternal sunshined those out of my memory.

reply

That's unfortunate actually... you're gonna find out that the sequels suck and being disappointed again and again and again. Foreveerrr...

reply

I don't think I've met anyone who really hated on the Toy Story movies.

reply

I love all of them.

reply

I think most grown up women don't care about "cartoons."

reply

I love cartoons...always have! I think I’m a grown up woman at age, gasp, 76!! Are we still permitted to say woman...after all the word includes the no no word “man”? 🤭 Manhole covers have been changed to maintenance covers. Postman to postal carrier, fireman, policeman, etc. to first responder. BTW, which first responder? You can’t refer to me as a female (male not permitted). Thanks be in part to the “Me Too” movement.
I know! (hand raised) All of us are fast becoming an “it”....gender neutral! So, I’m a grown up “it” who has watched all of the “Justice League” series. Damn! I wish I had saved all of my stacks of the ‘50’s Superman comic books (we referred to them as comic books 🤷‍♀️).

As to the OP question, I’ve never watched “Shawshank Redemption”. But, to those who are interested here’s some info:
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/shawshank-redemption-returning-theaters-25th-200553027.html

My choice would be just about anything which starred Harrison Ford, especially the “Indiana Jones” movies. I will also add the MCU films.

reply

Well, I said most women. Not all. Still, cartoons are far from universally loved. Many people dismiss cartoons simply because they're intended primarily for kids.

I'd say Jurrasic Park is the one most universally loved movie. Kids, teenagers, adults, any race and any gender. Probably not for the elderly (with heart condition) though. It's a fun movie, with interesting subject, well made and not overly long.

reply

Odd thing with me, ever since I was a kid (many moons ago 😔) I never cared for the Godzilla/dinosaur genre of movies. I watched the first “Jurassic Park” movie and was relieved when it ended. I didn’t like it, so therefore I wasn’t interested in seeing sequels. It was quite disturbing. I’ve never watched “Jaws”! I won’t watch Animal Planet. I don’t enjoy seeing animals eating other animals, so seeing monstrous behemoths eating humans is not my cup of tea.

reply

Worry not! The sequels are terrible anyway.

reply

I didn't even realize it's been 25 years.

reply

if only there was some kind of internet movie database thing where people could vote and score movies...
That way you'd have the answer to your question

reply

It's a little different... the IMDb top 200 is all about the highest rated by IMDb-ers. That's a far cry from being universal. Little kids, non English literates, and everyone else that's not in IMDb are excluded from the poll. Also IMDb-ers that never bothered to rate movies on that site.

While this one is more an opiniated discussion. What do you think is the most universally liked movie?

reply

yeah ok not everyone on imdb , same as not everyone in world weighing in on this thread , imdb is a preety big sample set though.

I guess a "fun for all the family, young and old" movie is what we're looking for.
I'll go Forest Gump

reply

See my prior reply to OP.

reply

yeah, b/c everyone would go to that place b/c they feel compelled to cast votes and score movies.

no one would ever skip that step after watching a movie.

and they'd all go to this place and vote and score movies even if they saw these movies years and years before such a place existed.

such a place would never skew heavily towards the rabid film fanatic. the casual movie watcher would surely be captured as well.

you're right. you'd have the answer as to what's most universally liked.

reply

Pixar films
Most of Marvel productions
The Godfather 1 and 2
The first three Star wars films
Shawshank Redemption
Raiders of the lost ark
ET

reply

I absolutely cant stand items 2 & 3 in your list , but thats just me ... They *do* seem to be popular

reply

You don't like the First two Godfathers, wow that's a first.

Most of Marvel films are overrated by fanboys who will give it thumbs up no matter if it deserves it or not.

reply

There's a difference between being acclaimed by critics and being liked by the audience. That's what makes it so difficult to find the most loved.

reply

As per the 2nd link:

“This is a list of films considered "the best ever" in national and international surveys of critics and the public.”

Notice “public”.

reply

I'm going out on a limb 'The Fugitive'.

reply

A limb because the villain was missing an arm?
