What do you think is the most universally liked movie?
Obviously not every single person is going to like every movie, but which do you think is loved more than others? I pick The Shawshank Redemption.

shareShawshank would've been my choice as well but since you took that I'll go with The Wizard of Oz
sharePorn
shareI don't think so. It's only got a 6.6 on IMDb.

Titanic.
shareAgree. Titanic

I actually don't like the movie myself, but I guarantee you that it's still very popular among all ages and genders all over the world. I think the melodramatic love story has universal appeal. It's like the modern Gone with the Wind.
sharemost men hate that movie
shareYou'd be surprised how many do like it, especially outside of the US. If only for the special effects and the action (maybe some history buffs as well). And some guys seem to love everything Leo does. There's a reason it was the highest grossing movie for quite some time. It wasn't simply movie tickets getting more expensive. For some bizarre reason people love it.
A lot of you are listing guy movies or movies more well-known in North America.
The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music are universal in their appeal.
shareI thought you hated musicals???
The Sound of Music was popular among older generations. A lot of young people haven't even heard of the movie.
The Wizard of Oz is not as popular outside North America.
I think the fact that they're old-fashioned musicals is also very polarizing.
I didn't say I liked them but they are what come to mind with such a question.
shareI just meant that a lot of people might feel the same way. Like I said, polarizing.
Besides, I remember you implying musicals aren't popular anymore!
Musical are not as popular as they used to be and that is a good thing.
shareLike I said back then, you're forgetting about the animated and Disney live action musicals. There may have been a time they were more popular, but nowadays they're still way more popular than sports movies!
shareA couple of sports movies made this list

Funny..I (female) still hadn't seen the film in 2001 and one of the most cynical, insensitive barflys (guy) in the world convinced me to watch it.
He loved it.
Barf.
Gone With the Wind is a classic man-woman movie. Titanic is a soap opera processed through a shipping mall and appealing only to women who bought the book The Great American Man Shortage, to show their moms why they are not married. Gone With the Wind shows why a solipsistic little fiddle-de-de bitch does not deserve a man like Rhett. Rhett lived, because he was a man for “another day.” Weakass Jack died, so the song can go “on, and on, and on, and on . . . “
Vomitously
PS You could not pay me enough to watch The Shawshank alleged Redemption. Don’t like prison movies. Don’t like any of the actors. Don’t like the source material. It may be widely liked, but not by me.
Vomitously. I'm going to have to use that. But not for Titanic.
shareThe Wizard of Oz
shareMy best guesses:
The Godfather
ET
The wizard of Oz
The Lion King 1994. Just because I think kids movies have more universal appeal, and this one seems to be at the top.
shareLike others have mentioned, I'd go with The Wizard of Oz.
shareStar Wars.
shareStar Wars is only a big deal in The West. The rest of the World don't care about Star Wars. Everybody had seen it, but they think it's just an another movie nothing special.
shareI'm not a Star Wars fan, to me it's just another fun action movie, but you're deluding yourself.
shareNo, I live in Asia (East and South East, never been to India or beyond) for decades. People know Star Wars, but it surely is not a massive influential ICON like in the USA or Western Europe.
Superheroes are way way bigger thing over here.
The question wasn't what do SE Asians like, what grossed the most at the box office, or what is my favorite movie, it was what is the most universally loved movie and that answer is Star Wars. If someone wanted to argue Ghostbusters or Avatar, maybe Jurassic Park, those might give SW a run but most of these suggestions are just someone's favorite movies. They are good movies, popular movies, but not the most universally liked. Forrest Gump is 10x better than anything Lucas ever made but it isn't the most liked movie. Shawshank, love it, but obviously not the most liked. Anyone can watch Star Wars, understand and enjoy it even if it isn't translated into their language. The story is heavily influenced by Kurosawa's movies, so is a natural fit to Asian culture. Is it the most popular movie in India, Vietnam, China? Maybe not. But is it the most loved movie worldwide, no doubt.
