What did you watch this week little fish? (07/21-07/27)

Hi, my name is Will T. AKA Stonekeeper AKA StonyG AKA I will not give you my real name. Please comment on my movies of the week, and I will comment on yours. Now le's do this in the rules of the art shall we:

Fack Ju Göthe (Suck me Shakespeer 2013 TV): “The story of an ex-con who lands a position at a school that sits over the spot where money from one of his earlier robberies was stashed.” I think this might be my first German movie and it was a charming, cute and funny romcom. I liked all the bright colors, the cast and the story; a very good movie to watch with your loved ones. 7-7.5/10

The Wicker Man (1973 DVD): The experience was not ideal because I was a bit drunk after drinking a few Bloody Caesars with my brother, it was late and the sound was mediocre and no subtitle were available on the DVD. So I missed quite a bit of the dialogue. I also found the story pretty straight-forward, linear and empty of unexpected twists and turns but, it was marvellously strange, pleasantly unsettling and a fun watch. The songs were creepy and also enjoyable. 7/10

The Da Vinci Code (2006 TV): Wasn’t great the first time around but found it a bit better on rewatch. The entire cast is good with the exception of Tom Hanks. Apparently a few other actors were considered before him and I think they would have been a better choice (Crowe, Fiennes, Jackman, Clooney). Jean Reno lit up the screen every scene he was in, Tautou and McKellen were good. There might be one sub-plot too many and a few scenes needed more editing but the story was pretty interesting. This movie had a few of connections with The Wicker Man. 6/10 (Bumped from a 5)

Toy Story 4 (2019 Theatre): More of the same, with new characters and amazing CGI. If you love the 3 others chances are you’ll enjoy that one too. I had fun with my parents and my 2 kids. I found that it went by super-fast but was kind of hoping for a bit more novelty in the gags and the events. 7.5/10

That Thing you do! (1996 TV): Fun film but something is missing for it to be really memorable. Maybe a stronger ending or a bit more emotion, I’m not sure. Still, I enjoyed it. 6.5/10

I finished Season 3 of The Walking Dead. I loved each episode except the one where she refused to kill the bad guy as was the plan. But that character payed for it big time later on so all is well. Overall of 8.5/10

reply

I really like The Wicker Man. I have it 7/10 on IMDb.

I haven't posted on one of these Sunday threads in ages lol. I haven't watched many movies this year. I have been watching series though. I'm currently rewatching The Last Kingdom and La Casa de Papel. I'm also in the middle of an anime series called Monster, which is about a Japanese doctor in Germany who gets caught up in a serial killer case. It's pretty good except for some annoyingly bad politics that have dimmed my enthusiasm for it. I'll keep watching it, but it's better when it's not all political.

Last night I did rewatch "The Flower Girl" (1972), which I had recommended on the game yesterday and got myself in the mood to watch again. It's set in Japanese-occupied Korea and is about a girl whose family gets destroyed by the twin oppressions of the Japanese occupiers and the Korean feudal landlord class. My favorite north Korean film, and one of my favorite films in general. I rated it 9/10 on IMDb.

reply

Always nice to see you drop here my friend.

The flower girl (I think it's actually called A Flower girl) looks pretty bad by its Imdb page. Maybe someday I'll get the chance to see it for myself...

reply

Yeah. It's because it's north Korean, so it's "communist propaganda", which means there's a huge amount of bias against it right from the start. Just about everything from a communist country that has even a hint of politics in it gets absolutely and ruthlessly slammed by Westerners who go into it with the intention of hating it because they're supposed to. Only completely non-political movies from communist countries, or "dissident" movies (which are usually acclaimed), or movies like Eisenstein's that are recognized as artistically significant (his films are some of the few that get away with having communist politics for that reason), have a chance of being praised as good films, getting good ratings, good reviews, etc. Everything else is blown off as "nothing but propaganda" and therefore inherently bad.

Anyway, the movie is on Youtube, and the comment section looks pretty positive from what I see.

Edit: Oh, as for the title, IMDb recently changed it and the change makes no sense. First of all, in Korean, I don't think there's any distinction between "the" and "a". But "the" is in the official English title of the movie as posted by a north Korean channel on Youtube, and besides, it makes way more sense than "a".

Cool, cool.

Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood (2019) - A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles. It is not perfect but it is different. Full marks to Tarantino for trying something somewhat out there. A bit long is the only criticism I would have. 8/10

King of New York (1990) - A drug kingpin is released from prison and seeks to take total control of the criminal underworld in order to give back to the community. I had not seen this cult classic before. Walken is great. Not a movie to be taken literally. It is a lot of fun. The body count gets high. 7/10

Valdez Is Coming (1971) - A Mexican-American sheriff must resort to violence against a powerful rancher in order to get just compensation for the pregnant Indian widow of a wrongly killed black man. Lancaster had a lot of makeup on or he spent much time in the sun. Trying to pass Burt as Mexican was problematic but this is a solid western with a great ending. 7/10

Another Man's Poison (1951) - In an isolated house, mystery writer Janet Frobisher is involved in potentially murderous relationships. I love isolation movies and this was has a lot of Hitchcock like twists. Some parts of the plot may be a bit unreal in places but I found it entertaining. 7/10

The China Syndrome (1979) - A reporter finds what appears to be a cover-up of safety hazards at a nuclear power plant. Let's hope nuclear power plants are run better today. Jack Lemmon was great. Jane Fonda was also Oscar worthy. Great drama and Jack makes this movie a 7.5/10

reply

OUATIH will be on my list for sure.

I had King of NY on my netflix list many years ago. Idk if it'S still there.

The china Syndrome is on my Amazon wishlist.

reply

I'm sorry, but I thought Splatter University was such a bore! And it was so obvious that the scenes with the group of students were added later on. There are other low budget slashers I'd rather watch again.

reply

That's okay. I know Splatter University isn't great, but I got a cheap thrill and a kick out of it. I probably won't watch it again though. What are some of your favourite low budget slashers?

reply

Black Christmas and My Bloody Valentine (the uncut version) were the best ones to me.

reply

are you referring to the originals, i assume?
i really like the original black christmas. i'm somewhat less keen on mbv, but it's a fun watch too.

reply

Of course the originals! Did you see the uncut version? You actually see something of the kills and they have some build-up, which is often missing in the slashers I've seen.

reply

i'm not sure which version i watched, tbh.
but i'll see if i can track down the uncut version. i've only seen it once, & even if it was the uncut one that i saw, i'd be happy to give it another chance.

reply

I have seen Black Christmas, but wasn't a huge fan. I haven't seen My Bloody Valentine but might check it out soon.

reply

If you do check it out, make sure it's the uncut version. Yes, those parts are grainy, but without them the movie feels off.

reply

have you ever seen pieces? that's one of my favourites. i believe it's still streaming on tubitv if you haven't seen it.

reply

I haven't seen Pieces but it sounds interesting. I will have to check it out.

reply

Lynda Day George is the highlight of Pieces for me. From top notch tennis to “bastards!” She is amazing. Highly recommended. 👍

reply

welcome to the dollhouse is one of my very favourite films.
it really impacted me, in a way few other films have.

i also want to say that i really like how generous you are in your ratings. that probably might sound like a bit of a back handed compliment, but i really mean it sincerely. it seems like you really try to find the positive aspects of things, like you're a glass half full person, & i admire that.

reply

Yeah, Welcome to the Dollhouse is a great film that could definitely have an impact on viewers. Thank you for the compliment about my ratings. I do try to look for and appreciate the good in things.

reply

Death Proof: 7.5/10
John Wick 2: 6.5/10 (major drop from the first one which I rate 8)
Drive Angry: 6/10
Widows: So much potential fell short 6.5/10

Movies:

-Serenity (2019)
Some claim this is a so-bad-it's-good movie. Not true. This is boring crap with a ridiculous revelation.

-She's All That (1999)
I never saw this movie before because it never appealed to me, but I gave it a shot hoping it would be nostalgic. It wasn't, it was annoying and boring. It started out kind of satirical like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but soon turned into an episode of Dawson's Creek. Prinze and Cooke were wooden and unlikeable.

-The Stepfather (1987)
Totally a B-movie, but entertaining and pretty suspenseful. Terry O'Quinn was creepy and funny (loved the telephone scene!)

-The Stepfather (2009)
This one coincidentally happened to be on tv after I watched the original. Awful and unnecessary remake. Everything that worked in the original was taken out and replaced with boring stuff that didn't work.

-I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
I know a lot of people hate this movie, but I love it. It has everything I look for in a slasher. It may not be very original, but it is effective.

TV Shows:

-Batman - marathon

-Relic Hunter - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Twilight Zone (1959) - marathon

-Baywatch - marathon

reply

I Know What You Did Last Summer was a fine bit of fun

reply

Your such a hater!

Kidding!

Only saw IKWYDLS and it was many years ago but I onow I liked it.

reply

The only one on your list I’ve seen is The Wicker Man (1973). I love this film. Edward Woodward is wonderful in this and as soon as he sets foot on that island you somehow know he’s not leaving. My favorite line is Woodward saying: “Your all liars. Your all despicable little liars. And your the biggest liar of them all!” I know there are several versions of this film and some are tamer than others.

Movies for me this week:

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) 10/10 QT at his best and ranks with Pulp Fiction. Brad and Leo were wonderful. Must be seen.
Death Rage (1976) 6/10 Italian Mafia / Revenge film directed by Antonio Margheriti. Yul Brynner and nice scenery is about the only thing that keeps this one afloat.
Tiger Joe (1982) 6/10 Antonio Margheriti Italian flick has weapons smugglers vs Khmer Rouge. Really liked this one and Warbeck and King always kick ass.
The Last Hunter (1980) 7/10 Antonio Margheriti’s version of Apocalypse Now / Deer Hunter with Tisa Farrow teaming up with Warbeck and King. Genre lovers will enjoy this one.
Hunters of the Golden Cobra (1982) 4/10 Antonio Margheriti’s “Raiders” rip off that Warbeck, who is always great, can’t even bring to life.
Valley of the Dolls (1967) 6/10 Duke and Tate give performances that at times made me wonder if this film was poking fun at itself. Bummer ending.
Possibly in Michigan (1983) short - very strange and I’m not able to rate at this time. Check it out on YouTube.

reply

Thanks for dropping by Mrmojo and don't be shy, rate those movies so we can know what you thought of them.

Peace!

reply

I have edited to reflect reviews / ratings. Be warned: I’m a lover of Italian B film. :)

Awesome

the wicker man is a fun folk-horror movie. a sadly underpopulated genre, though i think midsommar was a worthy addition. haven't seen any of your other films, but i'm probably gonna finally catch toy story 4 this week.

my week:

a girl walks home at night (2014) 4 a bit strangely put together, but in a way that really pleases me. doesn't quite add up to much, but gosh it looks so pretty.

the big lebowski (1998) 5 unseen by me until this week. can't really say why. i love the coens. even when they're not at their best, they're always worth the watch i find.

i was afraid its cult reputation would soil my enjoyment. not at all, as it turns out. it's exactly the kind of thing i love.

madison county (2011) 2 could have been written by a bot that had been fed a billion slasher movie cliches.

boring gore, almost no nudity, but it moves reasonably well. if you have low standards & just want movies to fill empty hours, it will work. if you're more discerning, you should find something better.

wicked little things (2006) 2.5 this is a little better. mostly ok, even. i don't find the idea of zombie children all that terrifying, but at least this was a little different.

t-men (1947) enjoyably straightlaced crime noir, though i found it a bit tiresome towards the end, even at a fairly short 90m running time.

the gravedancers (2005) 2.5 drunk friends inadvertently awaken the ghosts of various killers. no imagination to be found, & the creature effects look pretty bad, even by low-budget standards. but all the women are really attractive, & it manages to chug along at a reasonable pace & ends up as a fairly entertaining watch.

silver linings playbook (2012) 4 if romantic comedies were actually like this, i would start watching them.

thou wast mild & lovely (2014) 3.5 i gave this a watch when it was first added to shudder years ago, and i remember thinking it was an interesting but ultimately ephemeral film.

now that i've seen decker's madeline's madeline a few times & think it's one of the best films of the century for sure, a revisit seemed in order.

i can't say my position shifted much. it has a weird, hypnotic buzz that i enjoy all the way through, & it certainly takes a turn at the end, but it still feels like she was just taking a few stretches & warm-up swings here before m's m, which is simply an enormous step up from this in every way imo.

the invoking 4 (2017) 2.5 horror anthology. starts promisingly. the first two segments are pretty solid, have genuine atmosphere, though they don't really pay off in any meaningful way. the quality kinda declines from there, but all the segments are watchable, and they're all pretty short. not terrible!

back to the future (1985) 4.5 the bttf films are disappearing from netflix at the end of the month, in case you feel like indulging in some 80s nostalgia. just about a perfect mainstream comedy, crowd-pleasing in the best sense.

the invoking (2013) 1 i thought this was an anthology horror film.
my mistake.
it's just one long boring, endless, extremely non-interesting 80 minute droning bit of nonsense.
there is nothing good in it.
i did think the blonde girl was cute. i liked looking at her. i'll give it an extra 1/2 star for that.

bottle rocket (1996) 3.5 i'd probably rather watch this than anything else anderson's made tbh. it's slight & modest, but i absolutely love it.

back to the future pt 2 (1989) 3.5 never seen by me before this week.
the first 30 minutes or so really felt off. like everyone was trying to be funny by waving their arms around & acting cartoonish.
but it settled down nicely after that, & i quite enjoyed it. its biggest pleasures piggy-back off the original, and ultimately it's not 1/2 as fun as the original recipe, but it's still a nice breezy watch. michael j fox was so very likable.

the invoking 2 (2015) 0.5 incredibly dull anthology.
i like anthologies because they usually have at least a bit of energy & will give me some trashy fun.
this was nothing. completely lifeless. nothing.

once upon a time in hollywood (2019) 4 the first time qt moved me.
i am not quite ready to declare this his finest film, but i reserve the right to do so at some point in the undetermined future.
but it is definitely his most sombre & emotional film.
i loved it.

jackie brown (1997) 3.5 i've always held this as perhaps my least favourite tarantino, too long, too plodding in its finale.
i now have to admit i was wrong.
i still feel that it lags just a bit in its finale. where it feels there ought to be a climax, i feel the film just sags a little.
regardless, part of being an adult is admitting when you're wrong, & i was wrong about this movie.
it's really good.

barbara (2012) 3.5 director petzold truly knows how to stick a landing.
while watching, i thought this was fine, an interesting look into east germany, but nothing to compare to the lives of others, to use the most famous & obvious point of comparison.
but what a great ending, i thought.

reply

inside llewyn davis (2013) 4.5 'i don't see a lot of money here' may be the coldest words ever uttered in a film.

nightcrawler (2014) 4 absolutely chock-full of tense & genuinely nerve-rattling moments.
but i think it's a little undercut by some far too on-the-nose moralizing.
if you want to bash media, i'll be happy to form a line with you.
but i thought the portrayal of blood hungry media whores willing to sell their souls to save their careers was obvious & felt very dated & inauthentic.
but yay for the acting & the tension & everything else.

charlie says (2018) 3 another manson family film. pretty good. focus is on the girls & off the gore & brutality & drug fueled orgies (though there's some of that).
it lags a bit over its almost 2hr running time, but i think it can be added to the short list of good manson-inspired films.

apartment 1303 (2012) 0.5 all i would have had to do was look up apartment 1303 on letterboxd & see its 1.3 rating.
would have taken 10 seconds.
but i didn't. i pressed play first.
& because i have this sick ocd-ish compulsion to finish films, i watched it all the way through.
pretty much a worthless movie.

reply

Damosuzuki, you have just seen The Big Lebowski? This aggression will not stand man! 😀

reply

i have no excuse!
i've seen most coen films. & liked almost all of them. some of them are among my favourite films of all time.
& i knew lebowski's reputation, of course.
i've had lots & lots of people tell me i needed to see it.
for some reason, i never did it until this weekend.
my folly.

reply

It’s better and better with multiple viewings.

reply

a girl walks home at night looks interesting.
Im surprised that it'S your first time seeing the big lebowski. I rate it 8/10
I agree with you on silver linings playbook. Such a delightful film. 8/10
back to the future: classic 8.5/10
Bottle rocket needs a rewatch and I bought it a few years ago.
back to the future pt 2 : we agree on this one. Here is my review: The first 30 minutes of this sequel are over-the-top and a bit too pompous but hey, it introduced the hover-board so that’s worth something. After that the movie gets better and makes for another fun ride. 7/10
Jackie Brown: Solid but not my favorite either. 8/10
inside llewyn davis: own it, been on my watchlist for ever.
Nightcrawler: had so much potential but I did not care much for the direction it took. 6.5-7/10

reply

Howdy;)

The Da Vinci Code was a better movie than a book (I thought the writing was lazy in the book and it's sequel) and I love Hanks in everything but we can still be friends😉
7/10

The Walking Dead is a guilty pleasure, I read most of the comics and love the show (the spin-off Fear the Walking Dead is ok but they kill off a lot of the best characters very rapidly and it's going stale for me tbh)

I've never seen the original Wicker Man in it's entirety but the Nick Cage remake is pure comedy gold👍
Nobody over-emotes like Cage, it's the sort of movie you watch with a few pals, a case of beer and pizzas

I saw:

Into the Electric Mist (09) Tommy Lee Jones doing his TLJ act PLUS the amazing John Goodman as a crooked businessman during a possible serial murder investigation
I didn't care for certain plot points but overall a really fine cast, beautiful Louisiana scenery and an interesting story 7/10

City On a Hill (19) Kevin Bacon as a corrupt FBI agent, married philanderer and all around asshole
Bacon is fantastic in this series even when you dislike him
Top actor!
I do get very tired of racial discussions and racial tensions...that stuff seems stupid to me and a waste of time but still...8/10

Donnie Brosco (97)
Depp at his finest as an agent trying to bust up the Mob in New York
Performances, cast, costumes and music were simply perfect (10/10)

Book of Monsters (19)
Cheapie DTV horror about girls trying to throw a party but one of them has a secret past
The practical gore effects were great, the acting was acceptable for a low budgeter, overall a fun bloody time (5/10)

I was out of town this week, I'll contribute more next Sunday Stone👍

reply

Always a pleasure to have you here man!

Donnie Brasco is a classic. 8.5-9/10

See you soon!

Thx:)
I've got my notebook handy!

The Wicker Man: 6/10
The Da Vinci Code: 8/10

The Beach Bum - Biggest disappointment of the year for me. I had high hopes for it but it wasn't funny at all and there was nothing good about it. (5/10)

Never Back Down: No Surrender (6/10)

Truth or Dare (2017) - Eight college friends head to a "Haunted Rental" for Halloween. But when they replay the game that made the house infamous, they awaken an evil spirit intent on stealing their souls. I liked it and thought it was better than the 2018 Blumhouse theatrical movie. (7/10)

Leprechaun Returns - This is not a movie most people would consider good, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it highly entertaining. (8/10)

Jackie Brown - This was a lot better than I expected. I've heard mixed things about it and it's now my third favorite Tarantino movie. It had a very good story, though I thought the buildup was better than the payoff. (8/10)

Men in Black 3 - Really liked it, and in my opinion, the best one of the series. (8/10)

Taken 2 (6/10)

Death Proof - Thought it had the potential to be very good, but it was a slight disappointment. Tons of dialogue that had no impact on the story, of which there was actually very little. This doesn't seem like a movie Tarantino would make. His worst. (low 7/10)

Quarantine 2: Terminal (7/10)

Fast Five - Really liked it, my favorite of the series so far. (8/10)

Psycho IV: The Beginning - Not at all well-liked or commonly seen, but I thought it was actually pretty good. (7/10)

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - I was impressed by this. Really strong movie all around. I know I'm not supposed to say this, but I thought it was at least on par with the original trilogy. (8/10)

reply

Wow, I was not even aware of The Beach Bum and it'S totally my kind of movie. Have you seen Surfer,Dude?

Damosuzuki also watched JAcki Brown, what a coincidence! 8/10

MIB 3: needs a rewatch but I know I liked it less than the first but more than the sequel.

dEATH pROOF: 7.5/10

Revenge of the sith: also needs a rewatch but have it at 7.5/10 fo now.
