Something I've noticed about this site lately.

I've noticed a lot of "I need help with the title of a movie" and then notice that they only have one post and then don't post anything on another thread afterwards.

reply

Perhaps they're only interested in knowing the answer and they're making accounts at different sites just to ask this question? I have to admit that a lot of them seem trollish.

reply

Damnit! I was only just thinking about making a post on this subject, so you're not alone in noticing this strange phenomenon.

reply

It’s been going on forever. It is lazy and selfish. If you “can’t get a scene from [insert description of 20 year-old movie] out of [your] head,” there is something wrong with you.

reply

Agreed; it does appear to be happening more often though.

reply

that seems a little harsh to me.
i can understand why something like that might gnaw away a bit at a person. like having a song you can't quite place, a word you can't quite find.

i had a memory of seeing a movie with my dad when i was 8 or 9. had only the vaguest impression of it, but remembered one scene specifically - that there was a bomb thrown about by a group of men, who were casting it from one person to the other, until they realized that it was a dud.
it had always sat at the back of my head, & i always wish i'd known what it was.
& some helping soul on the imdb boards figured out that is was the mouse that roared!
it made me irrationally happy just to know what film i'd been watching on 70s tv as a kid.

reply

I had that with a 2 tv shows. I could remember 2 scenes from 1 episode and a brief flash of the opening credit scene of one of the shows and a one scene from the other. Bugged me for years, and years. I don't know why it was important to know, but I did need know. I asked on the IMDB board and solved within a minute. I was so happy and I found both shows on youtube which made me even happier.

reply

I had one too, an anime show I caught a bit of on Toonami in the early 2000s, an end-of-the-world type of show, which the little bit I saw of left an impression and I've always been curious what show it is and what happened with it.

reply

I watched a movie when I was a couple of months old (old enough to stand) in a crib. I remembered three scenes with the last showing the man slap a woman really hard in the face. That slap shocked me which is why I never forgot it. Many years later when I was in high school, I was channel surfing when I saw one of the scenes I remembered, then the second and third scene with the slap. I scribbled the name of the actor and movie title on paper and placed it somewhere. Now, I'm back to square one until I find the paper with the info. LOL!

reply

The truth is often harsh, damo.

reply

Nothing wrong with wanting to know the title of a movie you only remember one scene from. Maybe you want to see it again to find out why it made such an impression on you so many years ago. Nothing wrong with that at all.

reply

More than just a little harsh...

reply

i'm like that with music, like it's all supposed to mean something bigger than life

it's part of a fantasy you play in your head as well, trying to find meaning from the most obscure moment

probably the person doesn't have enough support in their life as far as money and dreams go

hopefully the said person doesn't join the matrix or whatever, the paradox of the mind and reality

reply

I don't mind the question being asked, but what bothers me is a new account is made and then they contribute nothing afterward.

reply

I'm confused.. what exactly is it you expect them to contribute? Some people just want to learn the title of a movie that's been bothering them, and the Internet, intended to be as free as it is (and moviechat.org, which is also free) is a place for them to do that. If you don't like it, maybe start a pay-to-ask type movie website? I guarantee nobody will join it however so you'd probably be wasting your time.

reply

They could at least return to their thread and reply.

reply

There are a couple of reasons they may not. First, they may not realize that some people come on here frequently. They may not know anyone expects a reply, and may not even realize that some people come back here frequently.
Second, some people may be a bit intimidated. Innocent questions online are often met with hostile responses. A non-confrontational person may find that the less they stick their head out the better.
I don’t think it is mean or malicious. A casual user may not understand how frequent visitors use this site.

reply

The thing is that most of them are never heard from again. That seems rather troll-like.

reply

For me, a troll is something completely different. A troll is someone who is rude and abusive. Trolls usually post a lot, because they are trying to cause trouble and offend people. I would call this more like a phantom. They appear briefly and then are gone.

reply

a troll dosent have to be rude and abusive, a troll may just post something controversial that will get a lot of responces just for the hell of it , and will then stick with %absurd opinion% just for laughs in a sort of attention seeking way.
and obviously that often descends into abusiveness along the way

reply

Like mark said, a troll doesn't have to be rude and abusive.

Have you read some of these threads? The descriptions are sometimes so vague or so absurd, the intention seems to be to get a kick out of sending people on a wild goose chase or seeing how many people fall for it or just irritating people. On top of that, I suspect that a lot of these threads are made by only one person, so I would consider that troll-like behavior.

reply

No, a troll can seem friendly and “endearingly” clueless; witness the celebrated croft_alice.

Who nonetheless was obviously a troll.

reply

It's got this feeling of "I got what I wanted out of you guys, now I'm leaving." Why not stick around?

reply

What annoyed me on the old IMDB boards is when someone asked a question that could be easily looked up on...IMDB

reply

It's like when people walk into a store and ask what the price is even though it's right in front of them.

reply

When I need help with the title of a move I post it "I Need To Know". I always get an answer.

reply

That's where I advise these people to post their questions if they haven't gotten an answer by the time I come across them.

reply

its a shame there isnt some sort of alert to new posts in there on the front page, like there is for the individual movies.

reply

I don't mind them posting it here, but I don't like how they don't contribute after.

reply

It was Jim trying to increase his site's membership count.

reply

Homework assignments...

Its every other movie message board, too

reply

That's me.

reply

Well, I did that last week about a Chinese movie and nobody replied.

I saw it on Amazon or Netflix or something, and it has since been removed. It was a good movie, but I have no idea what the name of it was. :(

reply

But you've posted 27 times. I'm talking about the people who create the account, ask it and are never heard from again.

reply

Now you make me feel guilty for the information I seek on a movie title. 😁 ...I just signed up after reading your thread.
It would've been on IMDB had it not disappeared. Fear not, I shall revisit afterwards.

reply

There is no need to feel guilty. Hopefully, someone will be able to help you out with this movie title.

I would suggest also posting your question to this board:

https://moviechat.org/bd0000001/I-Need-To-Know

reply

I have no problem with signing up by finding this site because you were looking for a way to answer the question. I also question why there's a sudden influx of this. It's cool that you'll revisit. We need this site to grow. Welcome.
