indiewire's top 100 films of the decade

why they're posting a list 5 months before the end of the year escapes me, but they have, so here we go.

good & fun list i'd say. some really quirky, esoteric choices - kate plays christine, the arbor, madeline's madeline. the only thing wrong with it is that paddington 2 should be #1!

& there's no florida project or tangerine, which slightly shocks me!

letterboxd tells me i've seen 68.

it's also been posted on letterboxd for those that use that site:

Tangerine is there

reply

ah, you're absolutely right. silly of me to have missed that.
i actually prefer the florida project, but i think both are great films.

reply

I like Take Out better than both

reply

ah, i've never seen that one. i haven't seen any of baker's films pre-starlet. they're all on my want-to-see list, though.

The top 10 are:

10 Lady Bird 2017
9 Mad Max Fury 2015
8 The Master 2012
7 Carol 2015
6 Holy Motors 2012
5 Inside Llewyn Davis 2013
4 The Act of Killing 2012
3 Certified Copy 2010
2 Under The Skin 2013
1 Moonlight 2016

I have seen three of these - Lady Bird, The Master and Moonlight. Three I have never heard of.

Some surprises but most are predictable oscar nonsense like moonlighting, la la land, call me by your name and a star is born.

The 2 on there that I love are inside Llewyn Davis and inherent vice.

The one that honestly makes me pissed is somewhere, that movie made me sick. Sofia Coppola has got to be giving some kind of favours to the critics. Even that crappy Colin Farrell movie did well with the critics. It doesn't make sense.

reply

i have to push back a little on you saying that 'most are predictable oscar nonsense.' leaving aside whether moonlight & cmbyn are nonsense, i'd say that for every widely know oscar friendly film on that list, there's two left-field lesser-known oddities.

the top 20 alone has world of tomorrow, dogtooth, leviathan, uncle boonmee, holy motors, act of killing, certified copy & under the skin.

that is not your typical hollywood fare.

reply

Those are still movies by directors that are "respected" by critics.

Magic mike xxl is a weird one though, I will give you that.

reply

well, it's a critics' list for heaven's sake!
did you expect it to be made up of ski comedies?
i don't mean to sound pissy or anything. if you don't like films like that, then you're entitled to your preferences.
but i don't think it makes much sense to criticize a critics' list for being made up of the kinds of films critics tend to like.

reply

I was hoping for critics with some original tastes. Guess I should have known better.

reply

I've only seen 6! Most I never even heard of!

reply

Sounds like me. I've seen only five, and liked only a couple of them. The rest I watched? Meh. I'd guess that 80-90% I've never heard of, either.

reply

By my count, I've seen 50.

reply

i've seen 43

reply

18 for me
