What have you done to mark the 50th anniversary of Apollo?

I've been watching a lot Apollo 11 docs this month. There's been stuff all over TV for a few weeks now. I also watched The Right Stuff, which I guess isn't directly Apollo related, but it serves as a prologue.

I dropped by the planetarium briefly a couple of weeks ago.

Today I've been keeping an eye on this astonishing website:

Here's an explanation for what it actually is:

10:56 is the big moment

What an amazing coincidence that the time on the Moon is EDT

I recognize the courage it took for these men to do this. There were no guarantees that they would safely complete the mission. Anything could have gone wrong, but thankfully, nothing did.

reply

It really is pretty amazing that they made it back alive when you think about it. So many things could've gone wrong that would've doomed them to death in space but thankfully everything went right and they got back okay.

I was watching a doc today where one of the guys who worked on the mission said he didn't expect it to succeed. He said he thought they wouldn't successfully land until the fourth mission. If these three had died, though, I doubt there would've been any other missions.

reply

I hadn't heard that about it possibly taking until the fourth mission to get there. As I said, it took courage. I couldn't have done it.

nixon had a speech prepared in case they didn't survive

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.

These two men are laying down their lives in mankind’s most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.

They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.

I saw that. Kind of surreal.

reply

Nothing. I can't get excited about it.
