The "I'm so old" game

This is a game I've seen played on a message board site for one of my fave computer games, so I thought we could play it here too :D. I'll start:

I'm so old....

I can remember back when Sci-Fi Channel was called "Sci-Fi" and had ACTUAL science fiction tv shows and movies on it!

reply

I'm so old I had Read-Along-Records

reply

I'm so old I remember smoking sections in movie theaters
I'm so old I remember when a slice of pizza was 25¢
I'm so old I remember when people got cable TV for the reception, not channels
I'm so old I remember when the only foreign restaurants were Chinese or Indian

reply

Norm MacDonald on drugs:

I remember when pot was something you cooked your eggs in
I remember when hash was something you made out of corned beef
I remember when acid was something you threw in a guy's face for making a pass at your wife
I remember when ecstasy was that feeling you got when you threw that vial of acid in that guy's face

reply

I'm so old I remember "gas wars." (lowest price I remember paying is 22.9 cents a gallon).
I'm so old I remember getting a free drinking glass when you filled your gas tank.
I'm so old I remember not having to pump my own gas. (Yes, I know there are still places with attendants who will do it for you.)
I'm so old I remember picking up the telephone receiver and hearing the operator say, "number, please."
I'm so old I remember watching TV shows when they were broadcast - one episode per week.

reply

Free drinking glass...and it's a joke now, but true, you could get a free toaster by opening a bank account. I remember elaborate newspaper ads that showed a wide range of gifts, depending on the amount of that initial deposit. Even TVs I think.

reply

Exactly. I remember collecting dinnerware. The local gas station gave away dinner plates one week, a cup and saucer the next, a soup bowl after that, and so on. We had enough drivers in our family that I ended up with place settings for four. It kept folks coming back, for sure. And it was decent stuff, too. Not some plastic crap - it was actual ceramic stuff with a nice neutral, subtle pattern.

reply

I'm so old I remember having to check TV Guide to see what was on TV.

reply

Paper or digital?

reply

Paper, of course. The local newspaper was another way of finding out, but it didn't give any details - just a chart of times, channels, and show names.

reply

I remember those. They were never accurate outside of the cities, and sometimes had articles and stories written in them.

I welcomed digital, though I didn't like having to wait for it to scroll through all the channels. I was so happy in '07 when we could page through the channels independently of the TV guide channel and see for ourselves what was on, rather than be shackled to 3 lines and scrolling.

I’m so old when I was a kid...

Cartoons only came on Saturday morning.

You could leave on your bike in the morning and did not have to be home till the street lights came on.

You could get in a fist fight and be friends again the next day.

It was ok for your neighbors to discipline you.

The teachers were always right.

You always said sir and ma’am to adults.

My number one source of water was out of the hose pipe. :)

reply

Ah, Saturday morning cartoons...that's what Saturday mornings were for. 📺🥣 Mom and dad could sleep in for a bit while the kids watched cartoons and ate their cereal.

reply

The same era had great weekend night time shows too.

Love Boat
Fantasy Island
Dukes of Hazzard
Sha Na Na
Dance Fever

reply

I remember Saturday morning cartoons :D. Great way to spend part of the morning with your siblings while the parents were still asleep.

reply

Yes indeed! The main ones I remember were The Super Friends and Scooby Do.

reply

Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, Aladdin's Adventures, and a few others.

reply

I'm so old I remember using "The Pipes" screensaver.

reply

I remember that when I was a kid! The Pipe Dream screensaver! They did a visual joke about that on "Futurama" years later ;).

reply

I'm so old I remember when there were only three networks - CBS, NBC, and ABC. PBS didn't exist.
