Is Al Pacino a good actor?

Someone said to me this guy is supposed to be the best, but they saw Sea of Love recently and said they were not impressed. I thought about it and said well the Godfather got him the praise. Has he earned it with anything else? Not sure. I Said the Bank Robbery Film was good, Dog Day afternoon...

He was an amazing actor 30 years ago but he has been mailing it in for a long time now...much like De Niro:/

They had the world at their feet but they both got lazy...

reply

^This, but I might be a little more generous and say 20 - 25 years ago

Agreed...I'll see every movie he makes because I love that dude but he seems to be resting on his laurels now...Hard to believe my 'Attica!' guy just plays the same boring guy everytime :/

reply

Yes, I consider him a good actor.

he was a good actor

Serpico

He's great. I prefer his 70s films.

The last twenty years or so, he's tended to overact. I still enjoy watching him though.

reply

He was.

You are belittling Pacino without knowing a lot about him which is weird.

reply

I must respectfully disagree Knish...I'm not trying to be a jerk and I honestly enjoy your presence here on MC...I'm quite pleased to chat with you!

I honestly feel like Pacino (who was once upon a time the finest of stars) somehow became a parody of himself...
How the hell did Pacino go from 'Attica!' to 'Hoo-Ahh...?'

I will never disrespect the guy, but he's lost a step!

reply

Pacino like deniro has gotten lazy, but the OP seems to know little about pacino’s filmography. I don’t think he is in a position to judge him.

reply

Yes...its a bit odd.

I never understand these vague " my friend says" kind of threads.

It's about what YOU think. You watch a movie...you either like or you dont. You watch an actor...you either like them or you dont.

The opinions of others should not matter whatsoever .

I dont get this odd "I liked X movie but many didnt...am I wrong?" questions.

There are no absolutes when it comes to movies...if you like it or dislike it, then you are right because that's your own opinion. Who gives a crap what
others think or say?

The problem today is far too many people seem to think the opinions of others matter...and the more who express a certain opinion the more truth it must have.

It does not. You are the only arbiter of your own taste.

reply

I don't think you can last as long as he has in this business without being good.

reply

As far as I am concerned De Niro and Pacino can do what they like now. They have nothing to prove. They leave an incredible body of work behind them. They have earned the right to take it easy.

De Niro is even doing adverts for UK TV now...I dont begrudge him at all. He has nothing to prove any more.

reply

I don't think either gent has anything to prove anymore either...but if you look at Pacino in The Godfather movies or De Niro in The Deer Hunter or Mean Streets it's easy to say that they have clearly both lost a step...great actors but most of their best output was a long time ago

reply

But these guys are pensioners effectively semi retired...why would you expect them to keep up the same level of work at their age? That's just completely unrealistic.

These are actors that worked hard on their roles in a very intensive manner, sometimes gaining and losing weight etc. They just cant do that stuff any more, and I would not expect them to.

Let them enjoy their twilight years.

reply

No
They don't get to mail it in for 20 years...
They are legends, the work is too hard for them..? I don't care at all about their feelings

Guess what, my job sucks too but I don't get a sexy yacht full of bikini girls and a new sports car every Friday

You get to be Pacino or De Niro once in million years if you luck out...none of us ever do

Heat was the last good movie either of them did...it's been mostly shouting 'hoo hah' and various Focker movies ever since...A man is allowed to grow old but he should never quit on himself
These guys better bang out several more winners or I'm calling them losers!
