Do you think homosexuality an evolutionary glitch?

Controversial subject here, but an interesting one. The only reason for sex is procreation, the survival and continuation of our species. Everything that comes along with sex is therefore in one way or another ultimately tied to this same reason. That includes love, bonding, and companionship (these all strengthen the family unit and greatly increase the offspring’s chance of survival) as well as attraction, mating rituals and other social behaviors.

Therefore, to be sexually attracted to the same gender would seem to be some sort of hormonal glitch or evolutionary phenomon as there is no scientific explanation for its existence. It has occurred naturally in the animal kingdom for as long as sexual reproduction has existed, across almost all species.

While there are many social and evolutionary benefits to the existence of homosexuality: it creates companionship, cultural diversity and strengthens the family unit, it still is unable to produce the one outcome that is the sole reason for the existence of sex.

I know a girl who is gay but she seems very feminine and doesn’t seem to exhibit any sort of outwardly gay characteristics. She’s married to a woman but talking to her she gives me a really strong vibe sometimes and it makes me wonder if she’s not bisexual.

Hopefully you don't get attacked for this because I feel you're genuinely asking as a point of discussion.

It's hard to say exactly if it is some evolutionary glitch. Let's look at the way we walk. How can we be sure that we were created to walk on our legs and not our hands? Sure it could be more convenient the way we're doing it now, but perhaps that's not the way we're supposed to do it.

Walking upright may not be everything it's cut out to be: https://www.biomedcentral.com/about/press-centre/science-press-releases/27-04-2015

Interesting article, good post

But none of us can climb trees with our feet and God help you if you attempt to walk on your knuckles!

I think back pain (which I know a lot about) comes from the stupid work we do...wielding a 20 pound weed whacker, raking the lawn, bending over to fold the laundry or wash the pots in the sink...it sort of beats you up

reply

The human body is designed poorly when it comes to lifting things. We are better designed for walking/running.

You aren't wrong
But how often do you find yourself moving a couch or cleaning up the yard by yourself and totally regret it afterwards?
That sore, achy feeling the next day is simply awful

Maybe it's a dummy man thing but I frequently kick my own ass...I guess it's just what we have to do!

reply

i think it's an interesting topic as well.
there have been several recent studies that have suggested that female sexual fluidity might be an adaptation to help women secure more resources for parenting & general life survival in instances of rape/male mate death or general male absenteeism.

i think that's a very intriguing idea, one that feels very right to me, but of course you always have to be resistant to ideas that play to your notion of how you think the world works.

i think complete homosexuality, perhaps particularly in males, is a much tougher nut to crack perhaps, in that this is something that would take information right out of the pool, so to speak.

reply

I can't really speak to any of this but gay-ness existed in ancient Greece and was perfectly acceptable back then...several thousand years ago

I don't think we have any gay members here...We could certainly use a few to answer these sorts of questions...I'm afraid we are all grasping at straws with no idea what the hell we're talking about

I do admire everyone's attempts to be respectful though...it was a reasonable question from the OP and nobody responded with ugly nonsense

reply

I think humans have evolved from having sex just for procreation.

reply

Not to be controversial either but I think that it's natures way of keeping populations under control. Especially in those species who are the top of the food chain. I'm bi, and have a brother who is gay. I don't know if it's genetic or not as none of my other siblings are.

I don't like to think of it as a glitch, and now with scientific discoveries, many homosexual couples can have at least partial biological children, I think that my theory doesn't mean much, but it is just something that always made sense to me.

reply

Agree w the population control, I’ve thought of that too. I don’t understand how it couldn’t be a glitch though, since the sole reason for sex is reproduction.

reply

A glitch, to me, is a mistake. I think that nature is full of amazing instances of preservation, and I don't consider this a mistake.

reply

Yeah, you keep saying the sole reason for sex is reproduction, and while it's a biological certainty that without sex there is no reproduction, I think it's too simplistic to say you know unequivocally that the only reason we have sex is to reproduce. By that reasoning every sexual encounter that occurs without the intention of getting pregnant is somehow an aberration. I believe human sexuality is infinitely more complex than that. Also, it leads to questions around why a man can get sexual satisfaction via anal stimulation. There is no possible reproductive advantage of that, and yet it's a biological fact, so why would that be the case if sex only exists for reproduction?

reply

Or jerking off. There isnt even another person involved. It’s you, your hand and a bottle of gun oil.

reply

gun oil? 😊😊

reply

Lube. For when wet as fuck is still too dry 😁

reply

i agree

reply

It's not a glitch. It's just a natural trait that needs no explanation. If a person is gay, lesbian, transsexual, bisexual, hermaphrodite . . who cares?

reply

My supposition was scientific, not political in nature.

Sorry, but exactly how do you mean that homosexuality creates cultural diversity of strengthens the family unit?

reply

shes gay, she’s in a relationship, she’s not interested in you. Let’s hope you don’t get all weird and angry again because another girl isn’t interested.

Oh and what’s “gay characteristics”? Being feminine is a female trait, not a straight one. So what other “gay” things does she not do?

reply

I’m not pursuing her, and both feminine and masculine traits are all evolved for sexual attraction. So on a scientific basis I could safely say femininity is very heterosexual by nature.

You just get worse with every bullshit thread you make.
