Movies About The Ruling Classes/Secret Societies

I actually have "Eyes Wide Shut" but I saw it as a late teen, and I think I might understand a thing or two more not only with life experience, but film experience.

Do you know of any great ones? Any decade, any country.

reply

It’s been a long time since I have seen it but wasn’t the Dead Poet’s Society a secret society?

From Hell (2001)

Holy shit I clicked on this discussion just to comment this lol. Great movie.

i wouldn't recommend salo to any sensible person, but i think it's very much about ruling classes & abuse of power.

reply

Yes
Fascism, perverted decadence and abuse of power...a really difficult movie to watch

If either/or than really any film about monarchs, such as any number of films about Elizabeth I or Henry VIII. Also I liked Lady Jane with a 20-year-old Helena Bonham Carter. Nicholas And Alexandra (1971) is pretty lavish. A number of films about British aristocracy like Gosford Park. For America maybe the Great Gatsby. For TV miniseries, Fall of Eagles, Rome, I, Claudius.

As to secret societies, other than the obvious answer of Mafia, Yakuza, and Ninja movies, I'm a bit stumped when it comes to something based on non-fiction. (Not that you are specifically asking about non-fiction. The Dan Brown/Tom Hanks movies come to mind which I imagine are totally exaggerated about the Illuminati.) Not so easy to have a secret society in the internet age.

Edited: Here is a great entertaining episode of Fall of Eagles about the ruling class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIzOtoTn9kI

The Dan Brown stories immediately came to mind

Badly written novels but fun movies imo

The Skulls (00) is about a secret ivy league society of elite, wealthy students
It's a bit corny but enjoyable enough...

Supposedly there is such a club and guys like the Bushes are former members

Skull and Bones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skull_and_Bones

I wonder if "Anonymous" counts as a secret society. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_(group) Probably not as supposedly there is no core leadership.

As I said, not so easy to have a secret society in the internet age.

Of course the greatest secret society ever is the International Order of Friendly Sons of the Raccoons. Actually that is a Fraternal Society, and when talking about secret societies we have to distinguish between them and Fraternal Societies, like The Knights of Columbus. Also distinguish between a Secret Society and a Gentlemen's Club (No, not a strip club, but something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White's) Then there things like the Bilderberg Meeting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilderberg_Meeting that conspiracy theorists go nuts about because of some sort of human desire to believe a small group of individuals secretly control the world. No doubt the elites help each other out, but so would a Fraternal Order of anything.

There was a Simpsons episode about one where Patrick Stewart was the leader. https://simpsons.fandom.com/wiki/Stonecutters

Oops, I meant Skull and Bones, not The Skulls lol...guess you know I'm not a wealthy ivy league kid now😬

I went to community college and was inducted into a private top secret club called The Cans...we were the dudes going through the garbage pails for the 5 cent beer cans after the cool guys frat parties...our motto was '20 makes a buck and ramen noodles don't come free!'

Good post, thanks for the info nyc!

If its not too much to ask, how would you rate it on a scale from 1-10? I have so many movies on the watch-list, and need to prioritize them somehow.
