Expressions that should disappear

My bad. What the heck is wrong with "I'm sorry?"

reply

"I'm not trying to argue with you!"

The people who say that seem to never know what constitutes as an argument. Any time someone tries exchanging an opposing point of view, it is technically an argument (even if it is not super heated or angry in tone). Saying that is often just a coward's way out against someone making a legitimate point against what you said.

reply

Good point. I get the feeling that this statement is often said in a raised voice, though. Not shouting, but maybe "strong" voice is a better choice.

reply

"Woke." Not only is it grammatically bad, but anyone who believes they are "woke" are fooling themselves. Their eyes are shut tighter than ever.

I also resent "Sorry, not sorry." Anyone who uses that isn't fooling us. All you have to do is take out the first "sorry" and you know what they're really saying.

reply

Yes, both of these deserve to disappear.

reply

Say what?

reply

This is one that I'm not even sure what it means. Are they saying, "what did you say?" Or "I can't believe you said that!" Maybe even "Can you repeat that? I didn't hear you."

reply

I was trying to be a little pithy here, haha. You say something, I reply "say what?" Yeah, I guess it means a couple different things, but sometimes if I don't understand someone, or am surprised by what they are saying, I'll toss that out. Kinda sounds that an illiterate utterance.

Haha. I just checked the meaning of "pithy." I always thought it meant clever and playful, but more accurately it's concise and forceful. I'll have to remember this.

reply

Me, too.

reply

This triggers a memory. I dislike it when people who are well spoken break out into a vernacular when they are talking to a certain person or audience, I suppose Hillary Clinton and her fake southern accent would be the most famous.

Ed Bradley, who had a beautiful speaking voice, was interviewing some African-American teen, who said something (don't remember what) that caused Bradley to say, "say what?" So annoying. Sometimes patronizing. But I think mostly an attempt to appear "with it."

reply

Oh, that be cray!
Sorry...That sounded stupid coming from an old white dude lol!

Yeah, Hillary was not an awful person but her pandering was terribly embarrassing on several occasions
She once appeared on local a hip hop station with hot sauce in her purse and claimed she put it on everything...That's just shameless pandering and possibly even racist...ALL black folks like the hot sauce Hil?
She was a decent enough sort but her kooky attempts at fitting in never went very well

reply

I agree about the patronizing thing. If it's not your usual speech habit it sounds that way.

reply

'Don't look' has always felt like an invitation to look...I could never help myself!

reply

Well...I don't suppose we should get rid of it, but you're right. "Don't" is a perfect invitation to do just that.

reply

Yep, the worst thing to say to a little kid or a big dummy is 'Don't...'

I'm not a little kid so...
