Best WWII movie...

I say The Dirty Dozen
Tough to top Bronson, Marvin, Brown, Cassavetes and the rest of the commando gang
Telly Savales going bonkers during the third act made it way more interesting

This movie is what The Expendables wanted to be but the old stars were way better!

What's your favorite WWII picture?

reply

Saving Private Ryan is the only one I can recall having seen, so I have to go with that.

reply

The first 15 minutes or so may be the most realistic portrayal of Normandy ever.

reply

Brutal.

The Keep

reply

Silly as it was I really enjoyed The Keep

Come and See (1985)

This is a Soviet era film about the German invasion and occupation in Belarus as experienced by a young partisan named Flyora. This is one of those hate it or love films and certainly ranks on my top 20 favorite movies.

Its just so tragic and crushing but still beautiful in parts.

Highly recommend !!

reply

Never heard of it but now I'll make a point of finding it
Thanks Mojo

Shogun, please check it out and let me know what you think!

Watch with subs only. :)

reply

Yep The Dirty Dozen is a classic. The Big Red One (1980) is a good one too. You can't go wrong with some Lee Marvin. 👍

reply

Marvin is a legend
Small and wiry, he'd beat the hell out of a bigger guy for sure
Great tough guy actor

reply

Agreed he was great, A good hellraiser too 🥃🍻

reply

I've heard the stories about his hell raising!

Imagine going on a bender with Lee Marvin, Oliver Reed and Robert Shaw...

You'd be lucky to get out alive with a black eye and a bunch of good stories👍
Stars today are preening wimps
Real talk

reply

The Longest Day and Story of G.I. Joe both with Robert Mitchum

reply

Tough to go wrong with Mitchum

reply

Most of mine have been mentioned already, but one missing so far is Von Ryan's Express. I was eight when I saw it and it was the movie that first made me realize that sometimes the hero dies.

Another one was Where Eagles Dare. Also, The Eagle Has Landed.

reply

Yeah, that part was a bummer!
Your other two are good too👍

reply

I love The Pianist
Black Book was good also
Hacksaw Ridge was an amazing story
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
Empire Of The Sun
The Dam Busters
Das Boot

reply

Das Boot and Empire of the Sun were excellent

reply

Empire of the Sun is legitimately one of my favorite movies of all time.

reply

Downfall comes to mind

reply

I really need to see this one

reply

The Longest Day
The Dirty Dozen
The Battle Of Britain
The Bridge Over The River Kwai
The Dam Busters
The Great Escape [Edit]

Pretty well any WWII film that begins with ‘The’ by the look of it.

reply

Ha! Yes, 'The' is always a good start...

I need to see The Dam Busters...it gets mentioned here and I've somehow missed it

Your others were all great👍

reply

Dam Busters is a classic British WWII film. Another that’s similar is 633 Squadron.
