Stonekeeper's Summer Game: I recommend THIS Mystery Movie #457 - More than Just a Lucky Seven [LauraGrace knocks it out with PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE]

Independence Day is upon us, and the fireworks are a-poppin'. How's about we celebrate a spectacle of cinema?

So you guys like to play games? Here is an investigation game that can be time consuming but it's lots of fun. Basically, I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guys are going to guess, I will give a hint that CONNECTS your guess with the movie I have in mind.

Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve a love triangle.

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints, the point goes to the OP and he/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 votes. Otherwise, add a Bonus Hint.

Let's get it on!

Hint 1: Reign of Fire (2002) - At least one Oscar winner in the cast.
Hint 2: Cleopatra (1963) - IMDB rating in the 7s.
Hint 3: Sophie's Choice (1982) - MPAA rated R.
Hint 4: From Here to Eternity (1953) - Partially filmed in Hawaii.
Hint 5: Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) - Rottentomatoes score in the 80s.
Hint 6: Tropic Thunder (2008) - Comedy genre.
Hint 7: The Master (2012) - A film by Paul Thomas Anderson.

LauraGrace drops another win in the bucket with Punch-Drunk Love, a movie that's become somewhat of a 4th of July tradition in my viewing habits for reasons I am not sure I can fully articulate. Something about the high contrast coloring, the score that alternates between notes of needling dread and sweeping sumptuousness, and utterly bombastic explosions of pent-up feelings. No one quite captures the romanticism of the everyday like PTA.

I knew that was the only other-- but only 2 guesses without another hint, right?

And Fred never replied to mine with "added" to notify me for some reason. Hmmmm... Interesting.

But I really thought it was Tropic Thunder. The PTA movies being too classic for a typical Fred game.

reply

Too classic? Whew. I'll admit that I tend to pivot away from the prestige films because most of the time those are obvious recommends. Couldn't pass up the chance to give this one its moment.

reply

That's that!

reply

My favorite PTA movie, I rate it 9/10

reply

Total agreement. I'm a big fan of all his work, but this one exists in another stratosphere.
