I'm rarely satisfied with movie endings...

For some reason, it takes something very special for me to appreciate a movie ending. It seems like a lot of movies either downplay or overplay their endings. And a lot of times, I find some endings too forced, rushed, or contrived. And I hate it when a film has a shocking ending or super plot twist, all for the sake of having a shock factor. As long as the ending lives up to the overall premise of the film, has a deep meaning, or makes sense...that's all I care about.

The most prevalent endings that impressed me, was the ending scenes to: Scarface, There Will Be Blood, Full Metal Jacket, Goodfellas, The Raid 2, American Psycho, The Shining, Under the Skin, Kalifornia, Training Day, Natural Born Killers, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

Just to name a few.

I don't like endings that are rushed or sort of leave you hanging. Sorry, can't think of examples at the moment. Oh, and endings where the protagonist does something completely off-character.

An ending that was simple, sudden, unexpected, it sort of left me speechless

Five Easy Pieces
THX 1138

I also find moving an ending where a person is alone against the world, but it is still optimistic

Gone With the Wind
The Terminator
Passengers

Endings that never fail to make me cry

The Miracle Worker
The Wizard of Oz

Honorable Mention

Rob Roy - Best sword fight
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
2001: A Space Odyssey

Is Natalie Wood adorable in that movie or what??

reply

Absolutely! Also, I've always thought that cane perched against the fireplace is one of the most iconic images in American cinema.

reply

I agree.

reply

Of course, but I think I get even more misty eyed over the Dutch girl

reply

Yes, that is a great scene in the movie but it's not the ending.

I love the ending of apocalypse now.

The House That Jack Built had the best ending I've seen in a long time. I also liked the ending to the recent film, A Dark Song.
