tell me what movie to see: godzilla vs dark phoenix

it's a warmer evening here, not as warm as it will get but warm enough for me to want to spend at least a few hours in a nice air conditioned theatre.

there's nothing playing at the indie snob art-house theatre down the street, & i don't feel like hauling myself down to the mega-plex, so i'm gonna go to the tiny discount theatre that's a convenient 5 minute walk away from my apartment.

i've already seen ma (nothing to write home about) & rocketman (pretty good i'd say). you couldn't pay me to watch aladdin & i'm completely indifferent to late night & the new men in black.

that leaves:
dark phoenix - i'm a big x-men comic fan, & have watched and mostly enjoyed the films as well, & will see this movie at some point certainly, but the terrible reviews leave me fairly indifferent to seeing it any time soon. i'm happy to wait & catch it on streaming.

or

godzilla - also received pretty poor reviews, but i've heard that audiences seem to enjoy it & that at least the monster fights are good fun.

i'm not particularly keen to see either of them, but tickets are only $5 & will sit through either for the benefit of a/c. i am willing to either leave this to a coin flip, or to the will of this message board if anyone responds.

so please tell me what to see.

I haven't seen the new Godzilla, but I saw Dark Phoenix. It is not one of the best X-Men, but not one of the worst. It is alright though, with some good moments and mostly decent performances. I would rate it a 7/10.

i agree that it's mid-tier x-men.
there were some scenes that i thought were quite weak. the confrontation outside jean's old house & the helicopter scene in particular seemed almost shoddy.
but the ending sequence on the train is pretty good. not genuinely exciting, & it certainly didn't have anything unique, that stood out the way the better action scenes in xmen films have, but it was good enough.
every time michael fassbender was on the screen, the film gets about 50% better.
& the movie moved at a good clip. if it's not particularly involving, it's very efficient & pacey.

off the top of my head, i'll rank the xmen films like this:

logan
days of future past
first class
x2
dark phoenix
the wolverine
x-men
xmen last stand
x-men apocalypse
x-men origins wolverine

Godzilla

thanks allaby & dmac8.
anybody wanna break the tie?
allaby's luke-warm 'it was ok' review actually makes me lean towards dark phoenix...
but i'll still do whatever some random person wants.

Whichever movie has the longest run time. Sneak a hip flask in and enjoy a long drink.

I think Godzilla is more big screen oriented than DP. That's my rationale.

reply

i can see that.
but it looks like it's going to be dark phoenix.
i may end up going to see godzilla next week anyway.
maybe even tomorrow or sunday.
but for this evening, dark phoenix it is.

reply

Two hip flasks it is then.
