I remember On the Dark Side, although I first heard it on the radio, not in the movie. For a long time, I mistakenly believed the performer was Bruce Springsteen.

reply

I’m still working my way through your list. “When Your Mind’s Made Up” is really nice, and 2:15 to 3:05 is intense! Their voices sound so good together.

reply

Yeah, I know what you mean, TexasJack.
I liked all the songs in Once, but 'When Your Mind's Made Up' was definitely the highlight of the film for me.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova would then form the group The Swell Season with other members of The Frames (which Hansard was part of) and release an album/dvd package titled Strict Joy.
This live version of an older Hansard song, 'Fitzcarraldo' was the highlight of that one ... https://youtu.be/pR_1V1QWKYA

This is crazy good! Thanks for posting.

You're welcome.
I'm glad you liked it.

I can't make a list because it would be a mile long, but this is very true. Movies introduce us to music we otherwise wouldn't have known. A singer that comes to mind is Natasha Bedingfield.

reply

No movie name and no song. I’m sorry GE, I can only award half credit for this post.

reply

Dang, you forced me to look it up and now I think I was mistaken about it being Natasha Bedingfield. I can't even recall who I actually meant. It seems I owe you, Jack.

Downgraded to 1/4 credit. Get busy, Missy!

This, from Donnie Darko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Jo73WL3lgY

Great version of this song. I also heard it for the first time in Donnie Darko. I found out later that Tears for Fears had written and recorded the song years earlier. I still prefer the Gary Jules version.

I too heard it for the first time in Donnie Darko. knew which song it was before clicking link!

Another one I heard for the first time in Donnie Darko is "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen.

Like most people, I did not see Donnie Darko during its initial theatrical run. A couple of years later, I caught a special screening of the Director's Cut in a theater. Although it was nice to finally see it in that format, I was disappointed in the DC vs. the original release and one of the reasons was Kelly's puzzling decision to substitute "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS in place of "The Killing Moon". I like INXS and "Never Tear Us Apart" is a very good song, but I thought "The Killing Moon" was the absolute perfect song for the opening sequence.

tenous link ...

I first heard Iggy Pops "The Passenger" on a Budweiser advert, but it was Micheal Hutchence's cover of it - which is pretty good.
