Do you prefer to rewatch your favourite films?

Or watch a film you haven't seen?

reply

Yes.

reply

i just checked the last 50 movies i watched on letterboxd, & by my count i'd seen 8 of them before.
that doesn't seem that high to me. in fact, wouldn't have been surprised if the number was 20 or more. i watch a lot of movies, 2 a day during the week generally, & i often throw something on that i've seen before just so i can relax into something familiar. i'll usually leave daring or difficult watches to the weekend.

reply

2 movies a day, that's pretty good. Do you always watch the entire film or stop watching if you really don't like it?

reply

i'll almost always watch a film through to the end.
now, full disclosure: i watch a lot of trash. that's not all i watch. i watch quality films sometimes, but i do sit through many, many awful slasher films shot over a weekend in arkansas where the actors were probably paid with beer & weed. and sometimes, i will start to watch one of them & find that it's too awful for even me, a person with the lowest of standards, to get through.

so once in a while, i will say 'enough' and move on to something else. but those are the rare exceptions.

reply

Where do you find those kinds of slasher movies? I have pretty much seen all the "famous" ones.

reply

there are a billion or so of them on tubi tv, at least in canada - their content is a little different in the u.s. if that's where you live, but i'd imagine there's a lot of overlap. if you're interested, i could list a handful that i think are fun.

my idea of fun might be quite a bit different than yours, mind you, but if you like low budget trash i'd be happy to make a few suggestions.

reply

If you could list some unknowns that are entertaining I would appreciate it. That way I don't have to watch the really bad unwatchable ones haha.

reply

no problem. here's a handful, with short reviews i wrote for them on letterboxd.

don't judge me too harshly if you watch any of these and find them completely awful, lol.

crushed (2009) 3/5 deeply silly but enormously fun low budget fatal attraction/audition knock-off. could have been a little sleazier, but i had a very good time watching it.

plank face (2016) 3/5 asks you to accept one hell of a character change, & i feel it has to lose a few points on that, but it's so completely earnest that i can't help but love it a little. the actors give it their best shot, & manage to keep their cool doing things that could have looked very silly. in that way it's quite a bit like harvest lake, another film from this director that i think i liked a bit more than this.

still, i give this guy credit: he's making low budget horror that's quite a bit unlike the other films you'll have seen a billion times. a bit of fresh air, almost.

hooker with a hacksaw (2017) 3 - the title is pretty accurate.

witchcraft 11 - sisters in blood (2010) 3 fun! absolutely ridiculous, but it's enjoyable & reasonably well paced, the girls are cute and there's a smattering of decent enough gore.

blood trap (2016) fun setup, & they certainly got a foxy lady to play the bad guy, but why did the camera have to shake & jostle every time there was a touch of action? odd music score at times. good fun for the most part, regardless.

the atoning (2017) 3 fairly decent low budget haunted house film. not genuinely frightening, but it's sombre & maintains a pretty decent atmosphere. i did find dialogue faded in & out a bit at times - not a showstopper, as i was watching a subtitled version on tubitv, but it was a bit distracting.

blood hunt (2015) enjoyably brutal. the camera shakes a bit too much & the editing is a bit too choppy, but the couple are sympathetic, the bad guys are loathsome, it moves at a proper pace and it delivers on violence in a very tough & satisfying way. exploitation fans ought to dig it quite a bit.

surrender (2003) fantastically incoherent soft-core lesbian crime story/relationship drama with a touch of bondage thrown in. made not a bit of sense - people show up, people go away, deaths are announced in ways that would make ed wood proud.

it made me horny & i had what i can safely describe as a good time watching it.

i'll take your dead (2018) surprisingly good horror/thriller. could have worked nicely without some supernatural elements imo, but why quibble? by indie horror standards this is very well done - good atmosphere, strong acting, well written & properly drawn characters.

necropolis (1987) as we all know, there's great trash & there's terrible trash.

this is great trash. i had no idea what was going on, yet there wasn't one moment where i was not entertained.

house of manson (2014) takes a slightly different tactic than most manson movies in the first half in focusing on his personal story & almost portraying him as a sympathetic lost soul. the 2nd half follows the more standard route you've seen if you've watched helter skelter or the manson family.

it's reasonably well made, fairly well acted. the only thing i'd single out for any kind of criticism is the music used at times, which felt a bit too much like generic modern alterna-rock and not all that period accurate.

the lead actor looks distractingly like billy crudup in almost famous at times.

harvest lake (2016) 3.5 there's no gore and whatever horror elements that do come in are very mild, but it's weird, the cast is attractive & don't embarrass themselves in potentially embarrassing moments, and have sex scenes that are indeed very sexy. this is not like every indie horror you've seen. it's fairly daring & interesting all the way through.

i declare it to be quite good!

brackenmore (2017)everyone else who's reviewed this has already told you that this is quite a bit like the wickerman. that's correct.
it's not bad. no grand pagan statues or anything that would cost too much money, but it has a nice glossy look for a film that must have been quite low budget, a neat score & some pretty solid acting. i found the ending a touch underwhelming, but otherwise this is pretty solid stuff.

the devil's well (2018) fairly entertaining found footage paranormal horror. perhaps lacks atmosphere & truly frightening moments, but it's properly paced & generally quite well made.

chastity bites (2013) meant to be a comedy horror, but the horror part is pretty much non-existent. plays smoothly, held my attention, went down very easily.

has an sjw pulse running through it that i found mildly annoying, but it doesn't get too heavy handed. lead actress is fun & has a real presence & is reasonably foxy.

anonymous 616 (2018) undercut by some pretty amateurish acting, and it ends very poorly - that cut-rate cgi at the end in particular is atrocious - but for most of its running time this is a tough, nasty & pretty well-made low budget slasher.

reply

Thank you very much! I haven't heard of most of these, but they sound interesting.

It's always fun to watch stuff that not a lot of people have seen.

reply

Between new movies/TV and older moves I haven't seen, I seldom have time for re-watching anymore.

reply

Bit of both of course!

reply

Agreed

mostly new but the favorites get played regularly

reply

Both. My favorite films that I've seen several times:

Some Like It Hot
Godfather pt.1
St. Vincent
Bagdad Cafe
Network
Good Night and Good Luck

reply

What a nice group of films. Not familiar with St Vincent, Godfather has been over exposed by AMC, but the others are nice choices. Anyone who hasn't seen Bagdad Cafe is missing a very sweet and off-kilter film. Very funny while not exactly being a comedy.

reply

When alone, a new movie. When with a friend who hasn't seen something, I like to see a favorite.
Which means I watch a lot of new movies, haha.

reply

It's always interesting to see someone's reaction to a personal favourite film.

reply

Of course. I even have a list of "mental comfort food" films I watch at times.

reply

It'd be really interesting to see what everyone's "mental comfort food" films are.

reply

Start the thread, it would be a winner
I'll contribute!

reply

Good idea

reply

I'm a rewatcher, not sure if it's laziness or if i just like to know what is coming, much easier to pop on the same old stuff than to venture into new territory for some reason.
