Movies you find to be overrated and why?

Opinions are like buttholes: everyone has one and they all stink. Share some of your overrated films below! Here are some of mine...

RETURN OF THE KING - Ungodly long, has too many silly comedic moments, and the last hour or so is dedicated to wrapping up every single arc, including endings that are just stupid. I still enjoy this film, but it’s actually my least favorite of the full LOTR/Hobbit series.

GREMLINS - Not funny, not scary. One second the film is a G-rated family comedy, the next a borderline R-rated horror film. I dont mind a film being more lighthearted or more horrific, but pick one! It has incredibly stark tonal shifts that come off as confused. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to include a scene where a character explains how her father was killed pretending to be santa, complete with eerie music, a single take, and a slow camera zoom inon her face? Hilarious? Tremors is a film that balanced horror comedy infinitely better, yet Tremors will never get the same recognition or popularity of Gremlins.

TITANIC - Another ungodly long film. The whole idea of turning a tragic historical disaster into a cheesy and cliche fanfic romance is pretty insulting IMO. Billy Zane plays the most cartoony villain ever, in a film that doesnt even need a villain. All that’s missing a curly mustache and a tophat.

HALLOWEEN (1978) - The film has an exilerating first and third act, but it’s that pesky middle act the brings the film to a slog. How many times do we need to see Michael Myers creeping in the shadows? It’s scary the first 3 times, but after time 27 of him just standing there, you start to get a bit bored. Not to mention, the teen characters become very banal in this section of the film, and you wish it would just follow the infinitely more interesting Dr Loomis, but doesnt.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - Despite excellent animation and design, this film is garbage. It features the most one demensional characters ever brought to the screen, made even worse by the lack of characterization in the script. Characters just feel and do certain things without any basic indication that they were feeling that way. Like when did Jack fall in love with Sally? Who knows! Suddenly he’s marrying her. The duckman should be the villain, but he’s suddenly cast out and replaced with the Boogeyman in the last 5 minutes of the movie, the the most pointless villain of all time. Not even the songs are that good, save maybe two. Most songs are just filler that stall the plot and add to the laughably short runtime. Pretty much everyone who I’ve told this opinion to has wanted to lynch me, and my post on TNBC board has been seen by everyone as a “sad attempt at trolling”. Sorry, you’re allowed to like it, but I think this movie sucks.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Good movie, but certainly not the best Star Wars. Other than its ending I find it to be fairly underwhelming. Give me Ep 4 and 6 any day.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON - Not bad, but pretty cliche and paint-by-numbers, especially in its characters. How many times have we seen the dorky main character who’s an outcast and embarrassment because he wants to follow his dreams? How many times have we seen the hot love interest who slowly sees something deeper in the dorky protagonist? How many times have we seen the stoic dad who refuses to listen to his embarrassment child, only to learn the error of their ways in the third act? The film also follows a very basic plot structure that makes it all too predictable. It even has the “liar revealed / big misunderstanding” cliche in the 2nd act! How many times have we seen that??? One single 3D flying scene doesnt make this one of the best animated films in history.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - DDL’s acting is far too over the top and ridiculous for a character who’s supposedly restrained. Anderson’s direction is the most obnoxious and in your face it’s ever been, and the film is just boring imo.

Sorry for triggering. What’re some of yours?

Inside.

Truly idiotic, horrible movie that for some reason, unknown to me, people love it.

2007, 2011 or 2016?

reply

2007. French.

reply

I liked it, but it took me a few times to get through it.

I think that the atmosphere and tension were great, but knowing what was coming I also found it a little frustrating at times too. I would say that it was an above average modern horror, but certainly not great.

Every character was unbelievably (in the literal sense. No one is as stupid as the characters in this drivel) stupid and did completely unbelievable things that no one would do. EVER. OBLITERATION of disbelief wouldn't even cut it with this movie.

Fetal abduction is a real thing. I think that's what makes the movie scary. Perhaps the execution is a little over the top, but the subject itself is terrifying.

reply

regardless of whether it's a 'real' feeling film, it's tough and brutal and i love it.
if you're going to make a visceral horror film, go all in, & make it tough & ugly. i think the people who made inside succeeded.

reply

Yeah, but it's just soooo stupid! All the absolutely ridiculous, idiotic things the characters do are just way too much.

JESUS CHRIST,YOU CANT BE SORRY WHEN WE ALL RECOGNIZE YOURE ATTEMPTING TO TRIGGER PEOPLE WITH YOUR MENTALLY CHALLENGED OPINIONS.

Tarantino's entire filmography.

I would say that most Oscar winning movies are overrated. Especially if they get Best Picture.

I agree with this one. I also didn't like that Michael was some kind of evil malevolent "being." It would be scarier if he was just a man.

To the best of my recollection he was just a man. It was the sequels that made him supernatural.

Forrest Gump (1994) - I've never really seen the appeal of this movie. I think that it's popularity was the special effects. The character and the story is just irritating.

Gladiator (2000) - Perhaps it's just personal taste again, but I just didn't love it. I thought that the effects were amazing, and I loved the score, but the movie just didn't stand out to me. I didn't find Crowe or Phoenix's characters to be as great as the academy. I think they've both had better performances.

Gangs of New York (2002) - Why was Cameron Diaz in this movie??

American Graffiti (1973) - soundtrack is better than the film itself.

Mary Poppins. Every time I hear about it, everyone on tv gushes about it like a bunch of sycophants, and they act it's like the most magical film ever to be made by Disney, and yet when I watched it, I got bored and irritated by the entire story. In fact, I kept wondering when it would be over. Nothing about it makes me want to watch it more than once or twice.

Frankly, I think the only reason they talk about it like it's a masterpiece at Disney, was because it was Walt's personal pet project, and he fought tooth and nail for over 10 years with that horrible shrew of an author to get the rights to make it into a film. It's also because of the changes he made to both Mary and the story itself that gave her the likeable side to her personality.

But even with the changes, I still do not find it an entertaining film and have never understood how anyone could love it enough to watch it multiple times or memorize the lines and songs.

ALIENS: This one hurts because it used to be among my top 5 favorite films, but I rediscovered it after nearly a decade of not seeing it and...well, I just think it sucks now. The writing is mostly at fault; these characters are among the most one-note and cliche ever. Even Paxton, who I love, plays such a sitcom stereotype. The tough guy? Check. The coward? Check. The jock? Check. The tough chick that can kick ass more than the guys? Check. A token black guy with a deep voice? Check. The only thing missing is the fat guy who's always hungry and the Nickelodeon checklist of stock characters would be complete. The corporate guy is the most obvious villain ever, and it's hilarious that the film tries to play his villain reveal as some sort of twist. Literally the first time you see his Mansley-from-The Iron Giant-looking head and his slimy speaking delivery, you know he's up to no good, but I guess James Cameron thought we were all too stupid? I'll never understand why Hicks is considered to be an action movie legend when all he does is stand around with grit teeth and shout cliche action dialog like "there's no time, we gotta go now!" He has no real character traits besides being tough, which on its own is very boring. Aliens is also ungodly long and boring; the xenomorphs don't appear until 59 minutes into the movie. That's ridiculous! I know you gotta build suspense, but c'mon, trim it down a bit! The xenomorph effects are still good but a lot of the miniature shots look like obvious miniatures. I don't even think the action is that great. The only things I can confidently say I like about Aliens are the musical score, the climactic fight, and Ripley's story. James Cameron as a whole is massively overrated, and the only movie by him that I truly think is great is The Terminator. Terminator 2 and True Lies are both enjoyable fun, despite their flaws, but everything else ranges from meh to bad.

90% OF THE MCU: I'll never really get why these films are so popular. Most of them aren't bad, but most of them aren't good either. They're almost all within the 5-6/10 range for me, and follow the same generic formula of story and characters. I don't like the mishmash of random tonal shifts, how one moment it's a gritty drama and the next it's a goofy sitcom, and I don't think the serious moments hit nor are the comedy moments actually funny. I don't even think the action is that great, as it's mostly the quick-cut close-up a-million-edits style of action we're used to today. I just don't get it. I'll stick to Raimi's Spider-Man, which perfectly balances the humor and drama that comics are supposed to have, with its well shot action scenes that still hold up nearly two decades later.

90% OF CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S FILMOGRAPHY: I just think he's a boring filmmaker. None of his films are bad either, but none of them really click with me or hold the gravitas that the film is clearly trying to have. I love Momento but that's about it.
