Guns of Navarone Play Set

Gemend’s post about Legos got me thinking of toys I had as a kid and how toys have changed over the years. As a child in the early 80’s I had a Guns of Navarone play set.

It’s so cool that they chose a film from 1961 and made a kids play set about it. The mountain opened up like a boys version of a Barbie dream house. Lol

I just think it’s really neat and I can’t imagine anything like that being manufactured and marketed today.

I remember seeing one of these on the Toy Hunter thing on the Travel Channel

This is one of those toys I wish I still had!😀

It would be worth a bit of money to a collector. No doubt about it. 👍

I was not aware of this.

Very cool
Damn, the things we throw away, break or blow up with fireworks as kids!

I hear they are a hot item

Reminds me a little of the Castle Grayskull set from He Man toys, except Navarone is way better.

I never had one, but I do remember it.

I would have loved that as a kid and the western fort in the inset pic as well. Airfix did a model kit of a more realistic beachhead fortress as well.

I grew up reading heaps of comic books and loved the ads for toys in them but could never order because they didn't accept international orders. Although that was probably a good thing as I have seen some pics of them online since then and can see there was some real crap!

I ordered the set your thinking of from the comics. They said they came in a chest. When they came in it was a little box and the soldiers were little and junky.

reply

Yeah it was a "foot locker" and was supposed to have ships and tanks, soldiers etc. Everything was just flat from what I saw in the online pics. Pretty happy to have missed out on it!

Sort of a crummy movie though, wasn't it? I mean, I had Man from UNCLE, Batman and Wild Wild West stuff as a kid, but they were fun stuff meant for a youngster. GoN was supposed to be a serious movie but I don't think it quite succeeded.

So the IMDb rating is a very respectable 7.6. I think I'm confusing it with a different WW2 movie, which after quick research is Force 10 From Navarone (1978).

reply

Yeah, Force 10 was horrible even thou it had Robert Shaw in it who is a great actor.
