Sleep?

I often hear reports how many of us don't get enough sleep. How about you all? Any trouble getting to sleep and getting enough hours? Also, beds are a big deal. You can get really expensive beds that are supposed to help you and your partner get rest and not disagree about the temp, snoring, etc. What are your experiences regarding sleep?

reply

Oh, beds. I had an old mattress I was perfectly comfortable sleeping on, but, it was old. People convinced me I needed to buy a new one, and I did. It was expensive. Mattresses are ridiculously expensive now in general.

I've hated it. Too hard at first, but I figured eventually it'd be okay. It went from too hard to too soft, and I don't remember any middle ground when it was just right.

reply

I definitely don't get enough of it. I just have trouble falling asleep in the first place. And then I've got the annoying habit of waking up in the middle of the night as well.

reply

Yes, I also tend to wake up at odd hours, and the worst thing is sometimes I'm Wide Awake. I'll end up getting up or turning the TV on or both. If I have to work early I'd just rest but a lot of days lately I'm not really booked up, so I amuse myself in the middle of the night. Quietly.

reply

I have insomnia and I take a prescribed med. called Trazodone. It works. I take one pill before bed and another one when I wake up 4 hours later.

reply

And you don't feel too hazy in the morning? I'm not a big proponent of medication, but if it works for you that's great.
Four hours sounds about right to me. I think I tend to wake up after four hours, but I've got so much time ahead of me I can stay in bed, turn the TV on or go to the computer. I'll then get another hour or two a little later.

reply

No, I feel fine in the morning. I'm a night owl and like to sleep late, so I usually get about nine hours sleep.

reply

I fall asleep in 5 minutes which great but I only sleep about 5-6 hours per night. Can't seem to get more even on the weekends.

reply

Do you think it affects you in some way? Because if not, then no problem.

reply

So far I would say no. Probably drink too much coffee.

reply

Just a PSA from Padeen: Rotate your damn matress once and a while! It makes all the difference and it will last longer.

On another note, here's an article I found amusing. Guys, if you sleep on a mattress on the floor, this ones for you.

reply

I slept for the last 4 months with my mattress and boxspring on the floor. Didn't like it. For one thing, it made my bed too low. Good for my dog, who's allowed on the bed, bad for me.

I have a very nice bed in storage, but it needs to be cut down to normal height (I ditched the two steps that used to lead up to it -- it's very high!), and sanded and sealed. Tried several times to find someone who could do that so I could have my bed back again, but never did.

reply

I did too in my early 20's, then got myself a proper bed. Good sleep is important! My dog used to jump up for pets and to say hello, then he would go back to his dog bed.

Is the bed in storage and antique? I've seen a few really nice, old beds like you described. They definitely don't make em' like that anymore.

reply

It is important, and on top of that, I don't like the mattress and boxspring. Need to get another one.

You're lucky your dog preferred his own bed. This one doesn't. I gave up on having one for him. But honestly I don't mind sharing with him. Kind of comforting, and he's not a bed hog.

No, I couldn't cut down an antique. It's older, and it's cool, but not antique older.

reply

While not titillating, that's quite the bed story.

reply

Is that a nice way of saying it's a boring bed story? I can't argue with that 😄

reply

That’s how I prefer to sleep . But I got Vitoed

reply

Did you read the article Padeen linked to? Sounds like your getting vetoed is common.

reply

I only need 6 hours where my partner needs about 9

reply

There you go ! Kinda why I asked in the first place.
There was a time, still in place today, where I figured I'm not much different than a house animal. If I have a roof and soft place to lie down, I figure I'm Golden. I don't need fresh sheets and a ComforPedic, I just want to lie down and sleep !

reply

I’m the same way. I spend a day in bed if I have the day off and you know what

reply

Well, sometimes I wonder if I'm missing something, not having a nice big fresh bed to go to sleep on.
I have a bed but I had to take on roommates and had to cede a couple rooms. My bed is now Vertical and I sleep on a couch. I don't mind it but maybe it's not exactly the apex of human existence.

reply

I slept for 3 years on a couch and I slept just fine

reply

Zactly ! We get pushed into thinking we are Princess and the Pea. OMG ! What if I had 7 mattresses and there was a peanut under the second? I couldn't sleep !

reply

Are you allergic to peas ? If you are you could die!! Don’t sleep there

reply

Nope, that's not an issue for me. So don't start emailing me peas.
