Top 5 Directors AND Their Worst Movie

I know this might be hard, and I'm guessing I haven't watch the worst of most directors, because there is about 10% I haven't seen. "Worst" could also be a great movie, but your least favorite.

Vittorio De Sica - Indiscretions Of An American Housewife
Robert Bresson - The Trial of Joan of Arc
Luchino Visconti - The Damned
Frank Capra - It Happened One Night
Akira Kurosawa - The Hidden Fortress

Alfred Hitchcock- Family Plot (1976)
Martin Scorsese- After Hours (1985)
Steven Spielberg- The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
Ingmar Bergman- Thirst (1949)
Stanley Kubrick-Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

You didn't like After Hours? It's one of the few comedies I thought was actually funny. Dark humour, but funny.

reply

I wasn't a big fan of After Hours. For me it is Scorsese's weakest films. I would rate it a 6/10

reply

Ah well, different tastes. For me it's an 8 or 8.5. There are so few comedies I think are any good, so I appreciate it when someone makes one that, to me, is.

Stanley Kubrick - Fear and Desire
Paul Thomas Anderson - Sydney/Hard Eight
James Cameron - The Abyss
David Fincher - Alien 3
Ingmar Bergman - The Serpant's Egg

it is hard, for the exact reason you've given - there are lots of classic directors where i've cherry-picked their best, but haven't dived into the rest, so i can't really give a proper judgement. i've seen lots of films i really like by kiarostami or carl theodor dreyer, but it doesn't mean much to say xxx is my least favourite. sean baker's last three films are three of my favourite films of the century for sure, but i haven't his other five films, so i don't think it makes sense to say that tangerine is my least favourite when i have no idea what the majority of his other films are like.

i wouldn't necessarily say these are my top five directors, though they're all definitely in the mix, but they are definitely the five i like the most where i've seen enough of their films to say firmly 'that one is my least favourite' and have that actually mean something.

guy maddin - keyhole
yorgos lanthimos - alps
whit stillman - damsels in distress
russ meyer - beneath the valey of the ultra-vixens
park chan wook - stoker

Wah? It Happened One Night is my favourite Capra movie!
