"I was a news hound 5 years ago, I would read 2-3 newspapers a day, subscribed to The Economist, The Atlantic, Time Out NY and several other weekly news mags"
😳 That sounds awful. Did you watch the news too? I'm guessing you did if you did all that reading.
I did the same thing, shut it all down for the same reasons. We humans aren't equipped psychologically/emotionally to deal with worldwide horror and angst we can't do anything about. We are equipped to deal with it on a family/neighbourhood/town level.
I have a friend who's a news junkie. She's always angry, frightened, or upset about something she hears about. Right or left, all news plays on that and ramps it up.
Oh I was all about it but it all became too much:/
I work with a couple of people much like your friend and while I generally like them I hate when they shimmy over my way because I can hear it coming...Trump this, Climate Change that, Terrorism stuff...
I really want to tell them to buzz off but I like them and I'm sadly too polite
It's easier when it's a friend. She knows how I feel about it all, and being the good friend she is, dials it way back. Over the years she's learned to almost never mention any of it to me :)
That's a good friend!
She knows when to mod her political noise...
Most of my gang were Hillary supporters and I wont mention the orange fellow I voted for but you can imagine the very heated arguments that came out of this...My brother in law still hates me but I don't care
Sex, religion and politics...I avoid these topics like the measles!
Yep, she's a great friend 💕
Unfortunately I can imagine that all too well. Family members and friends hating one another over political differences of opinion shows just how bad things have gotten. Yours is one of many similar stories I've heard. Getting so invested in all that [email protected] makes people lose their humanity.
I had another friend who was similar to the first, except she and I shared a lot of opinions. But she kept on and on, and accusing me of being a sell-out and whatever when I didn't fully agree. I didn't care some of her opinions disagreed with mine, but she couldn't bear it that some of mine disagreed with hers. I couldn't take it anymore and finally slowly disengaged as a result.
It's funny how that old saw about never discussing sex, religion, and politics turned out to be true!
That old saw is correct...follow the rules and no drama ensues
No sex, no religion, no politics
“We humans aren't equipped psychologically/emotionally to deal with worldwide horror and angst we can't do anything about.”
Cat, I agree with your statement 100% 👍
I failed to give her the thumbs up on this but she is quite correct...a beautiful planet but a crummy world...almost entirely our doing
Thanks, MrMojo. We as a species have gotten way out of our depth with technology. First newspapers, then radio, newsreels, then TV, then 24/7 news stations. It's too much.
This used to be referred to as, "Carrying the world upon one's shoulders."
