reply

Hey! Wait a minute! I know ALL FIVE! I'm definitely getting dual citizenship, right Howie?

😎

My top 5:

1. Moxy - Sail On, Sail Away
2. Alanis Morrissete - All I Really Want
3. BTO - Gimme Your Money Please
4. Offenbach - Deux autres bières
5. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi

reply

I have never heard of Offenbach. The rest I know.

reply

They we're big in Quebec in the 70's.

reply

J'aime beaucoup Offenbach!!! Props man!

Vive Gerry Boulet!

reply

I'm not a huge Offenbach fan, but Soap Opera is a solid album.

reply

Share the Land is a classic old favorite.

reply

The Guess Who is by far the best Canadian group ever. They had some great tunes in the late 60s and early 70s - American Woman, These Eyes, No Sugar Tonight and on.

reply

I agree. Those are all favorite old songs. I love their sound.

reply

I'm a big fan of BTO as well.

Only 5?

As Far as I Can Spit - Rainbow Butt Monkeys (Finger 11) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBCxwKRAheM
All that Reckoning pt 1 - Cowboy Junkies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLUVYVkAyOE
And if Venice is Sinking - Spirit of the West https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tepxOAEBIE
The Mummers' Dance - Loreena McKennit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxTpvA-pUG0
We're here for a Good Time - Trooper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gCjJC_INNE

Honourable mention as I loved this song when I was a kid, and then I found the video on YouTube and it's so cheesy awesome! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9xBAtCsCTQ

I couldn't just pick one song from Alanis Morissette, Sarah Mclachlan, Gordon Lightfoot, or Leonard Cohen.

Edit- I totally forgot about this song. I saw these guys sing this in 95 to the Arrogant Worms (who sang it originally) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G_L9tXEwmc

reply

Living On Video brings back memories from the 1980s. Spirit of the West makes me think of the lead singer John Mann and his health issues.

reply

It was heartbreaking. Losing Gord Downie, and John Mann having to retire because of dementia in the same year was not fair.

reply

And Share the Land seems to always connect me to this old classic also (although not Canadian): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ0gobSHgIs

reply

I'd never heard that song before. Thanks!

Keeping with Canadian songs, I think this was my favourite song in 88'. I saw them in concert a few years ago and they sang it and it was still a favourite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-TdRfY6Jck

reply

I like! In the same vein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exEUZS6bH3w

reply

I've seen this! I think after the Simpsons paid homage in the episode where Homer becomes head garbage man, (or whatever it was) somebody played this. Cool

reply

You’ll have to excuse him he’s not as his best

reply

who ?

reply

You win

reply

What do I win?? Please tell me it's a new car! 😜

reply

I can offer you these things . Yet I don’t have the means to provide them

reply

The mummers dance always kinda freaked me out

reply

I loved boys in the bright white sports car. First song I ever drunk kareokeed

reply

where's the RUSH

reply

This is one Canadian who can't stand Rush.

reply

And here is another one

reply

I am not a big fan either. I say this in a hushed voice.

reply

You're all just jealous you don't have such an angelic voice like Geddy Lee's.

reply

I don't have an angelic voice but I do like this one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quBCjo2rUZg

reply

If you can get past his puke inducing vocals, they're a great band who are all individually talented.

reply

Another favourite from the early 90s. I thought these guys would be bigger than barenaked ladies at one time. Lol https://youtu.be/_Pi_KUfKuq8

reply

You never hear that song anywhere. A good one.

reply

I played this for my wife. She said what happened to them??

reply

Their second album didn't do as well and they broke up. I liked their second album. I think this is my favourite from it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfyUgca1F0I

The Band: Acadian Driftwood - https://youtu.be/te7KW4K-00E
Alanis Morissette: That I Would Be Good (unplugged) - https://youtu.be/tprMGIaFWl0
Neil Young: Powderfinger - https://youtu.be/tdPs5YXQTSw
Joni Mitchell: Amelia - https://youtu.be/gcTDoi9JQiY
Tom Cochrane: The Untouchable One - https://youtu.be/-HYfcsKWbH4

Re my first choice, yes, I know that The Band was only 2/5 Canadian and that of the three singers on it, only one, Rick Danko, was Canadian, but Robbie Robertson wrote the song, so considering the writer and the subject matter, to me, this is definitely a Canadian song.

Btw, I could have easily chosen five Neil Young tunes, but I decided to limit myself to one song per person. Otherwise, After the Gold Rush, Helpless, Cortez the Killer and Rockin' In the Free World would have been listed as well.

Oh who am I kidding? Had I listed Neil Young songs, there's no way I would have been able to limit myself to five. Thus had I tried to limit myself to ten, Sugar Mountain, On the Way Home, Cowgirl In the Sand, Like a Hurricane and Southern Man would have been included.

reply

I could have listed all Neil Young songs also and maybe The Guess Who

reply

I believe The Band is actually 4/5 Canadian. Levon Helm is the only American.

reply

I never really understood the big fuss about Alanis Morissette. Her voice is too screechy like nails on a chalkboard and that Jagged Little Pill album came across as whiny to me. Don't know why it sold so many albums and why it's critically acclaimed.

reply

I love it.

reply

I know that there are just some voices that are pleasing to some and unappealing to others. I really like Alanis Morissette, even back in her pop days, but there are some voices I just don't get. Like Adam Levine.

reply

Lol at Alanis' pop days. Not many people realize that. She was the cheesy "Paula Abdul" in Canada in the early 90's. I bet she's embarrassed looking back at those years.

reply

She performs Too Hot in concerts sometimes, but it's a much different version.
